Since 2017 Beat & Path have been hollowing out a niche for their particular style of vaudevillian house music. This sixth anniversary release centres the figures who've been with the label since the start – founding members Uone and Out of Sorts (Hayden and Barton Strom), as well as festival staple and label stalwart Caly Jandro. Where its predecessor was a wide-ranging affair perfect for kick-ons, "Camp Out 002" zooms in on the quintessential Beat & Path sound: thick, restrained basslines; low-tempo percussion outmatching the energy of much faster tracks; cheeky samples from unlikely sources; and that perennial cosmic wink that permeates the back catalogue. To quote Oscar Wilde, "Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about."

Dispensing with foreplay, track one ("Like a Myth") jumps straight into a bouncing, jet-black groove, with snappy claps puncturing a serrated mid-bassline. T-Bone (Tony Bartlett)'s vocals interweave the whole thing, processed to sound as if they're getting beamed in from an interplanetary radio station. It's a fearsome, stomping follow-up to the trio's more ethereal release from earlier this year, and not to be played to family members with the slightest fear of pagan rituals.

With "Lyrical Gangsta", Uone and Markey merge the label's signature flavour with a nineties dancehall influence, transporting Ini Kamoze's vocals from Jamaica to Brooklyn. Although nearly ten minutes in length, you could easily loop this one under an incoming track for another five minutes. As all good dance music producers know, the trick is to lock the crowd into an irresistible groove; once you've done that, they're not leaving the floor.

Approaching the label's midpoint, there's a broken-beat take from the vault – Approaching the label's midpoint, there's a broken-beat take from the vault – Uone's fresh take on one of the label's classics. The original was a four-on-the-floor chart-topper peppered with euphoric pianos, delicately incorporating samples from the track's namesake, Malian musician Rokia Traoré. In his 'Goodwill' remix, Uone bends Caly Jandro's source material to match this compilation's tempo and understated dynamism. Meanwhile, the remix's title is a respectful nod to Rokia's eclectic musicianship and refugee advocacy (both of which culminated in her nomination as Goodwill Ambassador for West and Central Africa).

"Pass the Power" by Brothers Barton and Hayden Strom (and featuring Martine from New Zealand band Arma del Amor) cruises along at 120 bpm, showcasing the label's more progressive side with its subtle narrative development, warm harmonies and intricate bassline. Those familiar with the Stroms' Antix project will hear echoes of their rave credentials in this restrained roller.

The penultimate track is a fascinating Uone rework of one of the label's early anthems, a real furnace of a track from Out of Sorts, slowed and mystified through a focus on the original's pitched percussion. It's reminiscent of that Global Underground classic, Phonique's "99 & a Half" (I:Cube Remix), but with much-updated production and a chunkier groove that somehow amps up the sinister vibes.

Closing out the sextet is a gorgeous piece of 6/8 end-credits music dreamed up by Uone and Markey at a long-gone Rancho Relaxo festival. Some time later, Uone played the recordings to vocalist Seiki at the Rancho studios and the two were inspired to co-write the lyrics that tie the piece together. There's more than a wisp of opium-den poignancy curling through the resulting seven-minutes. As a way to sum up the label's grimy wistfulness, you couldn't get much closer than this.

In German literary tradition, there’s a type of novel called the bildungsroman. A typical bildungsroman follows a hero’s trajectory from birth to adulthood, charting their scrapes with reality and confrontations with chaos, until they finally emerge – a little scratched and bruised, but holding a hard-won nugget of enlightenment. Sanoi’s new self-titled album is a bildungsroman in deep house form, tracing the artist’s growth and fall from innocence, his confrontation with reality and eventual reconciliation with the vastness of the universe.

In 2020, Uone and Western released a ten-track manifesto of cinematographic desert house, ‘The Lone Wranglers’. The album – every instrumental element of which was recorded live – set a bold precedent for would-be soundtrackers of dust-ridden doofs. In ‘Desert Fire’ (the duo’s first release since their ‘Lone Wranglers’ album), they return with a stripped and earnest sound, distilling their vision-questing aesthetic to its essence.

At home among the most low-riding elements of ‘The Lone Wranglers’, ‘Desert Fire’ holds onto the apocalyptic intensity that characterises Uone and Western’s sound, with a violin lead, sweeping dub pads and vocal snippets uniting to form something filmic and visionary. Fittingly, the track samples Jarmusch’s 1995 psychedelic Western, ‘Dead Man’, an ambitious project that burst with prophetic literary allusions. And for a production that hints at the day of reckoning, there’s a surprising optimism to ‘Desert Fire’, which culminates on this parched line from the film’s protagonist: ‘The only man who’s got the guts to sell his soul for love and the power to change the world.’

On the flipside, Anjunadeep favourite Elif delivers a remix that’s DJ-friendly but laconic, cutting the violin and pitched percussion to let the piano chords cavort alongside Elif’s bewildering synth-lead arabesques – some of the more complex programming you’re likely to hear on a festival floor this season. The cerebral Istanbul-born producer has rocked festivals from Amsterdam to Tulum, and this understated B-side combines her understanding of dancefloor dynamics and music theory.

"We're always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what's possible in music," says lead singer and guitarist Paul George. "While creating Nisaba, we wanted to incorporate the traditional sounds of our travels, as well as the unique rhythms and textures of the Australian rainforest. We spend a lot of time taking walks, photos, videos and playing around with music and sounds in the rainforests around our homes on the Gold Coast and Byron Bay hinterlands." From the calls of native birds to the rustling of leaves, the track creates a sonic landscape that immerses the listener in the beauty of the natural world.

With a focus on live instrumentation and electronic production, Tijuana Cartel creates a unique sound that blends traditional and contemporary elements of music to create an unforgettable listening experience. With a global perspective and a passion for pushing the boundaries of their genre, Tijuana Cartel easily fall across multiple genres, from roots and world music, to organic house.

"We were also really inspired by some of the recent music we'd been sharing between us, acts like Seba Campos and Nicola Cruz" says band member Carey O'Sullivan. "We recorded this mostly separately in our own studios, which is how we write most of the music these days. When we got stuck, we'd email ideas to each other and bounce them back and forth that way. Then occasionally we'd all meet in my studio for a listen, change some of the mix, add some touches, and maybe record some extra percussion to layer in. After playing together for such a long time we have found our own way to write. Paul will arrange the music while I tend to focus on the original ideas and sound design."

The band has been making waves on the live music circuit in Australia, with fans flocking to see their high-energy live shows. Their latest tour for the 2020 album Acid Pony was interrupted by the pandemic, so the band toured Australia and Germany slowly over the past 2.5 years. With most shows selling out, the tour also included festivals such as WOMAD, Bluesfest, Woodford, Nannup and Rootbound.

The popularity of the live show has also influenced the new music the band is producing. As Paul explains, "A lot of feedback we have got recently is that the newer music is representing the live sound better than it had in our early years, so we ran with that feedback and continued."

Their new single Nisaba is sure to be a hit with audiences, as the band continues to push the limits of what's possible in contemporary music.

Nisaba is released through Australian and New ZeaLand label Beat and Path Records exclusively on Spotify and Beatport on Friday 31 March, and is available on all platforms worldwide on Friday 14 April.

To dig crates in 2023 is to explore an electronic ecosystem beyond taxonomising; there are now more tracks on Beatport than there are people in Hong Kong, and (as in nature) specialisation is the key to a producer’s success. Brothers Hayden and Barton Strom (Out of Sorts) understand this, having perfected a brawny but restrained style of house across their post-Antix career. Their latest release with T-Bone for Beat & Path presents the essentials of this sound with time-won self-assurance.

‘The Key’ centres around a confident vocal line from T-Bone, a Kiwi producer and vocalist who brings a blues influence to this extraplanetary expedition. With twenty-seven years in the underground electronic scene, Out of Sorts have the dexterity to try unconventional approaches; here they’ve begun with acoustic stems recorded by T-Bone on an Akai multitrack, manipulating them into a spacey early-morning house piece. The result is as much a song as it is a track, an exquisite electronic sculpture covered in acoustic fingerprints, and will appeal to lovers of Innervisions and the ecstatic gravity of the South African deep house sound.

The B-side is from Jamie Stevens, a man whose release schedule is absolutely sprawling this year (with releases on Balance, Bedrock and Selador in March alone). His mature, restrained signature is immediately audible on this seven-minute remix, which is too certain in its source material to bother with dramatic builds and drops. A few meticulously chosen elements and an irresistible groove; good dance music requires nothing more.

"Pass the Power" by Brothers Barton and Hayden Strom (and featuring Martine from New Zealand band Arma del Amor) cruises along at 120 bpm, showcasing the label's more progressive side with its subtle narrative development, warm harmonies and intricate bassline. Those familiar with the Stroms' Antix project will hear echoes of their rave credentials in this restrained roller.

It's reminiscent of that Global Underground classic, Phonique's "99 & a Half" (I:Cube Remix), but with much-updated production and a chunkier groove that somehow amps up the sinister vibes.

Approaching the label's midpoint, there's a broken-beat take from the vault – Uone's fresh take on one of the label's classics. The original was a four-on-the-floor chart-topper peppered with euphoric pianos, delicately incorporating samples from the track's namesake, Malian musician Rokia Traoré. In his 'Goodwill' remix, Uone bends Caly Jandro's source material to match this compilation's tempo and understated dynamism. Meanwhile, the remix's title is a respectful nod to Rokia's eclectic musicianship and refugee advocacy (both of which culminated in her nomination as Goodwill Ambassador for West and Central Africa).

Dispensing with foreplay, track one ("Like a Myth") jumps straight into a bouncing, jet-black groove, with snappy claps puncturing a serrated mid-bassline. T-Bone (Tony Bartlett)'s vocals interweave the whole thing, processed to sound as if they're getting beamed in from an interplanetary radio station. It's a fearsome, stomping follow-up to the trio's more ethereal release from earlier this year, and not to be played to family members with the slightest fear of pagan rituals.

Closing out the sextet is a gorgeous piece of 6/8 end-credits music dreamed up by Uone and Markey at a long-gone Rancho Relaxo festival. Some time later, Uone played the recordings to vocalist Seiki at the Rancho studios and the two were inspired to co-write the lyrics that tie the piece together. There's more than a wisp of opium-den poignancy curling through the resulting seven-minutes. As a way to sum up the label's grimy wistfulness, you couldn't get much closer than this.

In celebration of the sun, moon & earth coming into perfect sync & Uone’s love of chasing Eclipses all over the world, he has prepared a spectacularly mystical tribal edit of Pink Floyd’s ‘Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun’. Uone will be playing a live set with Western at the Oregon Eclipse Festival taking place over the 17th-23rd August. The title and vocals “heart of the sun’ perfectly setting the mood and feeling for the sun to align with the moon. This edit is a complete remake of the original.

Bon Iver (pronounced Bone-ee-VARE) has always resonated with me as a musician for his song writing and lyrical genius that hits the spot every time. From the first time I heard Bon Iver he became my go to when in need for music to contemplate, relax and chill out to. It is perfect morning music in my opinion, in fact the ultimate morning music to ease oneself into the day.
I compare our music to that of Bon Iver with its similarities and obscure, non formal chords and key progressions.
I hope you enjoy this edit as much as I have enjoyed producing it and that will take you to another place as it has for me.

For our next release, we are super excited to showcase and welcome Caly Jandro to the Beat&Path family.

Caly, a young upcoming Melbourne based Producer/DJ and founder of the Boogie Beats Collective has brought us something special for his debut. A disco-esque cut, with organic drums and layered jungle sounds featuring a beautiful North African style vocal which really brings the track to life. Caly adds that “once the bulk of the track was done, my friend Steve (Highway Beauty) laid down some keys and made the track wholesome”.

On the flip side label members,  The Drunken Apaches (one half Out of Sorts & Cyril Orson our designer) take you on a hypnotic rendition. A subtle 303 riff under the mix, with haunting strings, clanking chords and pitched down vocal samples pull this edit together.

Ranch head ganders asked Sander to present an extended 12 hour set to the Ranch community, a fusion between his 2 alias Johnny Lee Johnson (Soul-Jazz-Hop Hop) and Slick Marcel Rick (Disco to Funk). As the sun rose, so did the mist from the mountain, escaping calmly from the deafening silent valley. Soft wind moves the grass, but the grass does not make a sound as it holds its breath and waits. A snake slithers across a clearing, unafraid of the eagle that soars above watching and resisting the natural instinct to dive in kill.
The creatures know. The wind knows. The land knows.... It is time.
A black panther appears on the mountain peak, gracefully it leaps from rock to rock, descending toward the valley floor. With one final leap, as her feet leave the cliff edge, airborne she becomes black smoke and lands no longer as a panther but instead a strong African woman. Rokia’s bare feet land hard onto the grass, thumping her beat into the earth. She approaches a bush that is growing in the middle of the grassy valley floor and with one breath she ignites the lone plant in flames.
A black crystal hangs from her neck, which she unties and removes. She has been wearing it for years as it has absorbed her energy and character, becoming an extension of her celestial body. As she holds it, the crystal shakes slightly, soft vibrations in time with a faint rhythm. The crystal whispers Rokia’s beat, which has become imbedded in its dimensions.
She closes her eyes and takes a deep, long breath.
She opens her eyelids revealing a burning orange glow reflected by the fire, which she stares at fixedly for moments before throwing the necklace into it. Instantly that faint beat that the crystal whispered is amplified and black smoke begins to rise from this sacred fire.
Three men thunder down the mountain on horse back as if appearing from no where. With each hoof’s thud, dust bursts from and trails behind the dusty troupe as they ride at speed toward the sacred fire on the valley floor. Without the horses slowing, the men dismount with ease and perfect balance and their steed continue to gallop off into the mountain range. The fire’s glow illuminates the dusty bodies of these three cowboy as they approach and stand before it. However the shadows that their hats cast upon their face defies the laws of light and keeps faces hidden in darkness. Each of them in unison, turn out their pockets, emptying a handful of sand into each of their palms. The sand rhythmically pulsates, and whispers the troupe’s beat, reciting their story. They reach out and pour the sand over the fire and once again the whispering beat is amplified, joining in time with the beat of Rokia, as a sandy smoke rises.
Like a snake charmers flute, the sacred fire guides the paths of many toward her. One by one they arrive, each carrying with them their own unique beat to add to the vibration. The mountain top becomes painted with many different colourful characters, who have gathered for this summer jam ritual.

As the Southern Hemisphere inches towards summer, Sanoi and Rattler have delivered a perfect soundtrack for long days dancing in the Antipodean sun. Sampling Edwin Starr and channelling El Topo, 'Walking' is a gritty, galloping hero's journey into the sweatiest expanses of the deep house desert.

Sanoi is a Berlin artist now residing in New Zealand, where he's spent the last two years churning out festival-friendly releases for Bar 25, Stil Vor Talent, and Beat & Path. There's a strong theme of desert enlightenment running through Sanoi's repertoire, and this should appeal to fans of Sol Selectas, Acid Pauli and Bedouin.

For the A-side, Sanoi joins up with Jake Rattler from Waihi Beach, a festival regular whose 'Ball Pit' sessions on Noize Radio deliver strong underground deep house. Between them, Sanoi and Rattler have created something pulsating and groove-centred while tilting towards mysticism. A real behemoth of a bassline – all sinews and stomping feet – pulls the track along until Starr's lyrics drop in. At the same moment, a shimmering arpeggio starts to rise, offsetting the grunt of the track's low end. The rest of the track is a joyous tumble between these elements, celestial and gristly all at once, like a perfect day's dancing at a dusty midsummer festival.
