In 2020, Uone and Western released a ten-track manifesto of cinematographic desert house, ‘The Lone Wranglers’. The album – every instrumental element of which was recorded live – set a bold precedent for would-be soundtrackers of dust-ridden doofs. In ‘Desert Fire’ (the duo’s first release since their ‘Lone Wranglers’ album), they return with a stripped and earnest sound, distilling their vision-questing aesthetic to its essence.

At home among the most low-riding elements of ‘The Lone Wranglers’, ‘Desert Fire’ holds onto the apocalyptic intensity that characterises Uone and Western’s sound, with a violin lead, sweeping dub pads and vocal snippets uniting to form something filmic and visionary. Fittingly, the track samples Jarmusch’s 1995 psychedelic Western, ‘Dead Man’, an ambitious project that burst with prophetic literary allusions. And for a production that hints at the day of reckoning, there’s a surprising optimism to ‘Desert Fire’, which culminates on this parched line from the film’s protagonist: ‘The only man who’s got the guts to sell his soul for love and the power to change the world.’

On the flipside, Anjunadeep favourite Elif delivers a remix that’s DJ-friendly but laconic, cutting the violin and pitched percussion to let the piano chords cavort alongside Elif’s bewildering synth-lead arabesques – some of the more complex programming you’re likely to hear on a festival floor this season. The cerebral Istanbul-born producer has rocked festivals from Amsterdam to Tulum, and this understated B-side combines her understanding of dancefloor dynamics and music theory.

To dig crates in 2023 is to explore an electronic ecosystem beyond taxonomising; there are now more tracks on Beatport than there are people in Hong Kong, and (as in nature) specialisation is the key to a producer’s success. Brothers Hayden and Barton Strom (Out of Sorts) understand this, having perfected a brawny but restrained style of house across their post-Antix career. Their latest release with T-Bone for Beat & Path presents the essentials of this sound with time-won self-assurance.

‘The Key’ centres around a confident vocal line from T-Bone, a Kiwi producer and vocalist who brings a blues influence to this extraplanetary expedition. With twenty-seven years in the underground electronic scene, Out of Sorts have the dexterity to try unconventional approaches; here they’ve begun with acoustic stems recorded by T-Bone on an Akai multitrack, manipulating them into a spacey early-morning house piece. The result is as much a song as it is a track, an exquisite electronic sculpture covered in acoustic fingerprints, and will appeal to lovers of Innervisions and the ecstatic gravity of the South African deep house sound.

The B-side is from Jamie Stevens, a man whose release schedule is absolutely sprawling this year (with releases on Balance, Bedrock and Selador in March alone). His mature, restrained signature is immediately audible on this seven-minute remix, which is too certain in its source material to bother with dramatic builds and drops. A few meticulously chosen elements and an irresistible groove; good dance music requires nothing more.

Since 2017 Beat & Path have been hollowing out a niche for their particular style of vaudevillian house music. This sixth anniversary release centres the figures who've been with the label since the start – founding members Uone and Out of Sorts (Hayden and Barton Strom), as well as festival staple and label stalwart Caly Jandro. Where its predecessor was a wide-ranging affair perfect for kick-ons, "Camp Out 002" zooms in on the quintessential Beat & Path sound: thick, restrained basslines; low-tempo percussion outmatching the energy of much faster tracks; cheeky samples from unlikely sources; and that perennial cosmic wink that permeates the back catalogue. To quote Oscar Wilde, "Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about."

Dispensing with foreplay, track one ("Like a Myth") jumps straight into a bouncing, jet-black groove, with snappy claps puncturing a serrated mid-bassline. T-Bone (Tony Bartlett)'s vocals interweave the whole thing, processed to sound as if they're getting beamed in from an interplanetary radio station. It's a fearsome, stomping follow-up to the trio's more ethereal release from earlier this year, and not to be played to family members with the slightest fear of pagan rituals.

It is perfect morning music in my opinion, in fact the ultimate morning music to ease oneself into the day.
I compare our music to that of Bon Iver with its similarities and obscure, non formal chords and key progressions.

As the sun rose, so did the mist from the mountain, escaping calmly from the deafening silent valley. Soft wind moves the grass, but the grass does not make a sound as it holds its breath and waits. A snake slithers across a clearing, unafraid of the eagle that soars above watching and resisting the natural instinct to dive in kill.
The creatures know. The wind knows. The land knows.... It is time.
A black panther appears on the mountain peak, gracefully it leaps from rock to rock, descending toward the valley floor. With one final leap, as her feet leave the cliff edge, airborne she becomes black smoke and lands no longer as a panther but instead a strong African woman. Rokia’s bare feet land hard onto the grass, thumping her beat into the earth. She approaches a bush that is growing in the middle of the grassy valley floor and with one breath she ignites the lone plant in flames.
A black crystal hangs from her neck, which she unties and removes. She has been wearing it for years as it has absorbed her energy and character, becoming an extension of her celestial body. As she holds it, the crystal shakes slightly, soft vibrations in time with a faint rhythm. The crystal whispers Rokia’s beat, which has become imbedded in its dimensions.
She closes her eyes and takes a deep, long breath.
She opens her eyelids revealing a burning orange glow reflected by the fire, which she stares at fixedly for moments before throwing the necklace into it. Instantly that faint beat that the crystal whispered is amplified and black smoke begins to rise from this sacred fire.
Three men thunder down the mountain on horse back as if appearing from no where. With each hoof’s thud, dust bursts from and trails behind the dusty troupe as they ride at speed toward the sacred fire on the valley floor. Without the horses slowing, the men dismount with ease and perfect balance and their steed continue to gallop off into the mountain range. The fire’s glow illuminates the dusty bodies of these three cowboy as they approach and stand before it. However the shadows that their hats cast upon their face defies the laws of light and keeps faces hidden in darkness. Each of them in unison, turn out their pockets, emptying a handful of sand into each of their palms. The sand rhythmically pulsates, and whispers the troupe’s beat, reciting their story. They reach out and pour the sand over the fire and once again the whispering beat is amplified, joining in time with the beat of Rokia, as a sandy smoke rises.
Like a snake charmers flute, the sacred fire guides the paths of many toward her. One by one they arrive, each carrying with them their own unique beat to add to the vibration. The mountain top becomes painted with many different colourful characters, who have gathered for this summer jam ritual.

As the Southern Hemisphere inches towards summer, Sanoi and Rattler have delivered a perfect soundtrack for long days dancing in the Antipodean sun. Sampling Edwin Starr and channelling El Topo, 'Walking' is a gritty, galloping hero's journey into the sweatiest expanses of the deep house desert.

Sanoi is a Berlin artist now residing in New Zealand, where he's spent the last two years churning out festival-friendly releases for Bar 25, Stil Vor Talent, and Beat & Path. There's a strong theme of desert enlightenment running through Sanoi's repertoire, and this should appeal to fans of Sol Selectas, Acid Pauli and Bedouin.

For the A-side, Sanoi joins up with Jake Rattler from Waihi Beach, a festival regular whose 'Ball Pit' sessions on Noize Radio deliver strong underground deep house. Between them, Sanoi and Rattler have created something pulsating and groove-centred while tilting towards mysticism. A real behemoth of a bassline – all sinews and stomping feet – pulls the track along until Starr's lyrics drop in. At the same moment, a shimmering arpeggio starts to rise, offsetting the grunt of the track's low end. The rest of the track is a joyous tumble between these elements, celestial and gristly all at once, like a perfect day's dancing at a dusty midsummer festival.

Downplaying Sanoi and Rattler’s barbarous bassline, Madmotormiquel creates impact through tight percussion and expert dynamic control. The result is ideal for the early morning, an effortlessly cool chugger that subtly builds tension across its eight and a half minutes.
