퀘스천스(The QUESTIONS) - 대전 블루스(Daejon Blues)

70년대 활동했던 작편곡가 엄진의 대표곡으로 이미자, 박상규, 윤복희 등이 취입한 비운의 명곡이다. 1978년 녹음하여 이듬해 발표되었던 이판근과 코리안째즈퀸텟 '78의 유일한 앨범에 수록되어 있기도 하다. 트럼페터 진킴이 78년 버젼의 편곡에 기초하여 새롭게 녹음하였다.

반야심경 Heart Sutra

Ahn Chi-haeng is a living legend of Korea’s old-school gayo scene. Cutting his teeth on the 8th US Army entertainment circuit in the 1960s, he went on to lead the popular soft rock band Young Sound in the 1970s. He then established his own production company ANTA Production, where he reigned as a hitmaker with the Midas touch until the early 1990s. The series of Buddhist sutras he released at the age of 60 were playfully experimental, affirming his identity as a devout Buddhist while also channeling his professional knack for creativity. In contrast to conventional sutra recordings, Ahn opted to create something that could be enjoyed as well, adding Hip-Hop beats on Moktak sound(monk’s small percussion) and guitar parts. With the help of the chorus unit ‘The Siddharettes’, Ahn recorded four such records in 2004 alone. Originally intended for a small Buddhist audience, <Heart Sutra> eventually came to be rediscovered a decade later by younger listeners who shared the recordings through social networks. The few CD-format copies that had been released only sporadically were very hard to come by.

Here at Beatball, we’ve steadily reissued various works from Ahn’s back catalogue. And given his stature as a composer and producer, we felt that his solo releases also deserved proper attention. This has led us to recollect and reissue his most prominent sutra series, starting off with <Heart Sutra>. We selected 6 original sutras from the definitive double CD edition released in 2004, with impeccable mastering by Dave Cooley(Elysian Masters) lending presence and liveliness to the beats.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Samjin Company English Class

This is the long-awaited release of the soundtrack to the Korean box office hit from 2020, 'Samjin Company English Class'. Based on a true environmental contamination incident that occurred in the 1990s, the film follows three female protagonists as they embark upon a mission to expose the corrupt underbelly of their corporate leadership. The film was hailed as ‘Korea’s Erin Brockovich’ upon its release and was well-received among viewers and critics alike. It is also a buddy movie of sorts, featuring an adorable ensemble cast including Go Ah-sung (from Bong Joon-ho’s 'The Host'), Esom, and Park Hye-su.

The score for the film was created by Korea’s foremost electronic musician and film composer Dalpalan, who has previously worked on titles including 'The Wailing', 'Believer', and 'The Call'. The opening / ending title track, which features a chorus that quotes James Brown lyrics, is a funky synth pop gem that holds its own, and then some, as a standalone single. The gimmick jacket follows the 8-bit theme of the film’s closing credits. Other artwork includes gorgeous photo inserts of the film’s cast.

'Una Magnum Special Per Tony Saitta (aka. Blazing Magnum: Strange Shadows In An Empty Room)' is a cop movie directed in year 1976 by Alberto De Martino and starring Stuart Whitman, Martin Landau, Tisa Farrow, and Gayle Hunnicutt. It was co-produced by Italy and Canada. An Ottawa police captain searches for the person who poisoned his sister, who was attending the university in Montreal. Later on, he desperately starts to use his own brutal methods to find the killer, but the truth turns out to be something different than what he had expected. Armando Trovajoli is titanic in this score as usual in his magnificent long career. For this movie he has written action-driven funky music alternated to mysterious atmospheres and to elegant romantic/nostalgic music.

김지연 & 리바이블 크로스 <내 마음 흔들려 / 웃어 주세요>
1970년대, 밴드 리더로서 함중아의 음악적 이상이 구현된 역작.
탁월한 기타리스트이자 작곡가 함중아가 신중현의 애시드록 유닛 더 멘(the Men)과의 협업으로 알려진 싱어 지연(김지연)을 보컬로 내세워 제작한 음반이다. 음악적 멘토인 신중현의 영향, 여성 보컬과 당시 록밴드에게 흔치 않았던 현악과 리드 악기(오보에, 플룻) 편곡은 (신중현이 프로듀스한)임아영/김정미의 그것과 상당 부분 흡사하다. 앨범 전체에 걸쳐 리듬 파트(퍼커션)가 도드라지는 점은 신중현 사운드와는 차별화된 지점. 널리 알려진 톱트랙 '내 마음 흔들려'와 '웃어주세요' 외, '해변의 밤이 오면'과 '초록별' 같은 애시드 톤 짙은 '슬로우 싸이키 잼' 트랙이 앨범의 숨겨진 백미이다. 특히, 반도 록사에 유일무이한 프로그-싸이키델릭 트랙이라 할 '초록별'의 실험적 구성은 재평가 요망.  

리바이블 크로스의 유일한 앨범은 함중아의 음악적 역량이 집중된 작품이었지만 기획사의 부정적인 반응과 비협조로 판매조차 제대로 이루어지지 않는다. 이후 밴드 구성원 그대로 초록별(이 앨범의 수록곡 이름이기도)과 양키스로 진화하여 다수의 독집과 (고고클럽 활동을 위한) 경음악집등을 남긴다. > 이게 다 박정희와 유신 때문이다.

비교적 덜 알려지고 저평가된, 반도 록 음반의 보석 같은 작품!
이것이야말로 마지막 Hidden Gem.
2018년 5월 발매 예정.

Produced and arranged by Cheryl Hardwick, a former member of SNL house band. Cheryl was a musical director of Sesame Street at that time. Well, the notorious Hank Londoner(Bloomingsdale, Penthouse & Jordache) did her photos for jacket. Enjoy!
