We reached out to our community to share a 60 minute mix with us every week.

Week 2 theme was Soul Searching - Records for the soul

This winning mix is by DJ ROOPE-SETÄ from Helsinki, Finland. A record collector/digger, DJ and a producer. 'I’ve been diggin’ vinyl records (mostly soul!) for over two and a half decades and I’ve been searching for that perfect soul tune ever since (that’s impossible I know and I think I don’t wanna ever find it). So, my journey of Soul Searching has been going on for some time now. With my mixtape “Mellow Madness” I think I pulled it through pretty well and at least I found a deeper understanding of my soul while bringing that mix to life. The mixtape is full of 70’s slow soul tunes that will pamper your soul through and through. I used only 100% original vinyls and with the Hip Hop DJ’s touch!'

There have been several sources of inspiration that have really kept me checking for new music the last few years. Madlib's post D*&#a (06) production, future beats producers like Ras G and Dibia$e, and the many quality releases from labels like ReDef Records, Mellow Music Group, and Street Corner Music.  All of the quality music from the aforementioned artists/labels (among a host of others) have fueled ideas for new mixes. Among the array of quality releases, nothing has tickled my fancy quite like the ascension of Roc M*#$iano. Roc Marci's music is the quintessential example of old becoming new. There's nothing new about stripped down, loop-based production sprinkled with grimy raps. However, the way in which Marciano does it and the timing in which it is being done, make this old tried and true combination very refreshing. As much I tried to resist doing this mix because I considered it low hanging fruit, I could only resist for so long.  The music is just too good and I like Roc's catalog too much to have not made this mix.

This mix was completed six months ago and has been sitting on the shelf collecting dust ever since. I held off on releasing the mix because I thought another Marci album was going to drop during the fourth quarter of 2014 (as was done with his three previous albums during the last two years) and I wanted to time the mix's release with Roc's latest album. No such luck and I can't sit on this mix any longer because too much time has passed since I released my last mix.  So here you all go. Enjoy it because I'm not sure when the next mix is coming. Not to be confused, I'm always working on a new mix. Whether it's thinking of new concepts or themes, brainstorming songs and sequences, or the actual mixing of a mix; I'm always working on the next mix.  However, my process is getting slower and my time more limited. Please enjoy it until the next one because if the last few months have taught me anything it's that "next" is not always guaranteed.

We're happy to announce our first white label of 2015 by the muti-instrumentalist and vocalist Chris McClenney. His diversity is what sets him apart. It's amazing to watch him find his sound direction/rhythm. We've watched him experiment with bass heaters, house music, funk, and other styles, but what we love most is that all of his production always has soul in it. 

Lately he's been on a roll with his production and singing. There's only a few people who can make music that gives us the feeling that D'Angelo does and this white label by Chris does exactly that. 

We're excited to see where Chris goes from here on out. He has our support 1000%. Enjoy and spread this to all music lovers.

Since we haven’t known each other for long, I wanted to learn more about him. One of my fond memories is talking a lot about music while enjoying a panini from Stefanino Panino. Visiting the record store where he works is also one of my cherished memories.The set, which spans various genres from boogie, soul, jazz, and hip-hop to house and more, is curated with consideration for the venue and the audience, reflecting his kindness perfectly.
His kindness is reflected throughout, and the carefully crafted mix is pleasant, making it the perfect companion for a journey that you want to take anywhere.

始まりと終わりは、いつも間のパートより先に来るように感じます。リスナーが入り口と出口で似た感覚を持つような、そんな「本の栞」を探している感じです。リズムが変わる余白を持たせることも、私にとってはいつも大事です。少しブロークンなパーカッションやダブに影響を受けた曲も交え、ここには、雨の日でも晴れの日でも聴けるような、昨年拾い集めたいつも心に残る音たちが詰まっています。

I find that the beginning and end usually comes before the in between, searching for the bookends that hopefully evoke similar feelings for the listener on the way in and on the way out. It’s always been important to allow some space for rhythms to change. Leaning into some broken percussion and dubbed out numbers, this is a collection of tunes I’ve picked up over the last year that I always go back to, soundtracks for anytime whether rain or shine.
