You cannot separate pleasure from pain. Grotesque drums hiss and boom inside drill’s stricture, voices utter shattered phrases to each other in a darkening chain of whispers, synthetic violins mourn their last and rush towards singularity. Drawing upon the ‘self indulgent, purple prose’ of Angela Carter, the staggering works of composers Villa Lobos and Xennakis, the fissure between pagan mysticism of England past and its feckless, soul consuming present; ‘England as a Succubus’ is a lustful spirit that writhes and vibrates against a backdrop of lurid sonic pressure. 

Raised amongst the trees of the North Dorset countryside and presently residing in Manchester, Ship Sket grapples with a frenetic and maximalist style that subverts and perverts expectations of UK bass music with equal measure.

His new EP 'England as a Succubus' will be out on 7th June 2024 on Illegal Data.

Space&Sound: Practices for a Midnight was recorded in Budapest, Hungary during night time in a neglected subway on Podmaniczky street. 

We were experimenting with the interactions of the environment in our playing and also with the different possibilities of sound created by space.

No additional effects or after-work on the sound only the own resonance of the space and the final cutting of the recording.

On October 3, 2018, André Aciman, author of "Call Me by Your Name," and writer Benjamin Balint will discuss themes of exile and homecoming, of time, place, identity, and art across Aciman’s works of fiction and nonfiction.

André Aciman is the author of Enigma Variations, Call Me by Your Name, Out of Egypt, and False Papers, and is the editor of The Proust Project (all published by FSG). He teaches comparative literature at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He lives with his wife and family in Manhattan.

Benjamin Balint is a library fellow at the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, and Die Zeit, and his translations from the Hebrew have appeared in the New Yorker. He is the author of Kafka’s Last Trial: The Case of a Literary Legacy and, with Merav Mack, Jerusalem: City of the Book (forthcoming).
