Beats & Pieces Big Band - ten

On 27 January 2008 I asked thirteen friends and fellow students to a rehearsal room at the Royal Northern College of Music to play through some tunes I’d written for big band – from that first session, what became known as Beats & Pieces Big Band emerged. Ten years to the day later, on 27 January 2018, we performed two special birthday sets in that same rehearsal space to an invited audience of friends, family and key supporters, all documented here. On behalf of all the Beats & Pieces musicians past and present, thanks for a fun first ten years; we hope there’ll be many more to come.

Following their extensive 10th birthday celebrations throughout 2018, Beats & Pieces Big Band kick off their second decade with the release of a new version of their 2018 single ‘time’ remixed by trumpeter Nick Walters.

Nick’s remix of ‘time’ (composed by Beats & Pieces’ drummer Finlay Panter, nominated for a British Composer Award last year) draws on his huge range of diverse musical influences. He gives the track extra percussive drive and energy and finds a darker, more menacing edge in the heavy brass riffs and stabs, before a melancholic trumpet chorale brings the mix to a haunting close. 

A founder member of Beats & Pieces, Nick has quietly established a reputation as one of the most respected musicians on the UK jazz scene. He is a key member of projects as diverse as Ruby Rushton, Riot Jazz Brass Band and Anton Hunter’s Article XI, and leads and composes for his own Paradox Ensemble, who have recently been turning heads with their new album ‘Awakening’. He is also an in-demand session musician, having performed and/or recorded with artists including Katy B, London Elektricity and Everything Everything.
