Singer/songwriter Jess Zalzman said, "'What A Shame' was inspired by a situation I was in where I was debating getting involved with someone who was in an open relationship. This song helped me deal with all of the weird emotions swirling around during that time."  She shared her tune with producer BJ Alden, who loved it and worked with her online during the 2020 pandemic to produce this version without ever meeting face to face.  Kenneth Lovell of Blue Green Submarine contributed the mix to this version.  Jess considers it to be her favorite song she's ever written. This flute sample was sent to me via my Nextdoor.com project.  One particularly generous aspiring producer sent me a generous handful of tasty melodic sounds.  I flipped this one real quick and sent it back.

Face the Flute

The distant piano you hear is the sample I was given. I chopped it up a bit at the top then let it ride while I built a little speaker box of island dub around it. Not a genre that I have a-lot of experience in, but the sample just guided me that way. It was generously sent to me as a part of my Nextdoor.com project.

Bring Her Back

I listened to an iconic ascending chord progression from DJ Shadow's debut album and replayed it on my Rhodes and added some piano, drums and a vintage gospel vocal sample that I chopped up.
