On an evening here in Sydney (that was honestly not nearly as nice as this cover would suggest) I recorded my first "Isolated Sunset" in over 2 years. What has come to be called "Organic House" at its worst can be beautiful but entirely forgettable, but at its best it can be powerfully evocative - using live instrumentation to create incredible sound scapes that communicate passion like no other sub-genre of House Music. Spending quite a bit of time in Portugal is giving me some extra time to catch up on music and set recordings well overdue for my attention. This set is another slow burning collection of downtempo ethno house showcasing some of the more astonishing producers in the genre working today. For some this set's darker feel and slow tempo might distract from the rich, complex arrangements of the genre, but each track has consciously been given room to breath in the mix - to be its own fulfilling chapter of the larger story - and many of these tracks will surprise you with with their depth and emotional density. That said, I encourage you to listen late, listen loud, and to give yourself over to the next 90 minutes without distraction...

The last time I posted one of these sets was in the darkest days of the Lockdown in 2020 - an eternity away when everything about the world felt less certain and a little more raw. This set was recorded on New Year's Day 2023 in New Zealand - the middle of summer in the Southern Hemisphere and instead a time of hope and renewal for me and the world. While I tag of these tracks in my collection as "Dark" (hence the title of this series) they are just as often the some of the most emotionally full and sensorially astonishing tracks that I experience as a DJ - and I love these journeys as much as I love any of the music that I am fortunate to be able to play and publish for your listening pleasure.

This is actually a recording of a pre-set rehearsal that I'm posting while we wait for the good (and apparently very busy) folk at Aeonica to get their shite together to post the actual set recordings. Most gigs that I play I will have at the very least a pretty tight "crate" of tracks to play from, or sometimes (as in this case) I will map out precisely what I want to play and when. The truth for me is that you can never really know what anybody is going to like, so I make the commitment to play what I love and trust that if I do my job properly then it's a journey that [you] want to take with me. Anyway, Los Vampyros (the name I gave to the very stylish Colombian festival goers who wear sunglasses while bathing in the lights from the stage) seemed to enjoy the set and I had a blast playing it for them. This year the DoLab and Favela team had the daunting task of moving the festival to a new location and a new date - meaning that the usual long weekend crowd was a little lighter on Sunday than previous years. The blues. To some the idea of listening to music heavy with  emotion when the world is looking grim makes absolutely no sense at all - but for others, me included, it can help to process emotions in a powerful and cathartic way. We are in the midst of one the most terrifying, confusing and potentially life altering events in perhaps all of human history, and what is coming next for us is uncertain at best. This set of deep (and some might say dark) Afro House is my "blues" - offered to you as a vehicle to process your own emotions should you find that notion appealing. It is, as the title of this series suggests, a journey to and hopefully through the darkness, so that we all may be able to see and enjoy the light  - however that may show up for each us.

For anyone who should care about such things - this set both technically and sonically is the lead-in to the set that was recorded immediately following ("Through A Glass Darkly Vol.5) so for a true representation of our Saturday night/Sunday morning shenanigans try racking them up in succession.

Having endured several months of actually staying at home a handful of us decided to instead to stay-in-RV's out in the desert near Joshua Tree over the full moon weekend - an idea that resulted in this downtempo burner as the moon rose over the desert in front of us on that Saturday night...
