Hope Tomorrow

From an invasion produced by one demented man, to multiple mass killings perpetrated by one disturbed male at a time, the horrors they are reeking on humans is unforgivable. It isn't so much that this music is explicit of my feelings as it is the images that play in my mind's eye — images that I'm not even sure I'd be able to watch if I made the video that runs as I listen to this now. I am gutted by the inhumanity certain individuals are capable of.

Long Shadows

This piece explores my thoughts on ancient mystical experiences. I imagine sometime way back in our past, our ancestors began to notice their mystical, unexplainable feelings. They may have communed in the efflorescence of spiritual illumination around a campfire. Perhaps in trying new vegetation as they explored their world, they came across certain plants that enhanced those mystical feelings. In any case, our ancestors must have found life much the way we find it today — mysterious and a challenge to our intellect.

I wrote this in 2006 after reading an article on some new finds of human remains that are 4 million years old in Ethiopia, I felt inspired to begin a series of tunes based on the idea that ancient people tell their stories every time an anthropologist writes of humankind's curious ways, then and now.

Departure Lounge

With the discovery of human remains older than Lucy, I began to imagine how Lucy might feel about her ancestors being found and gathered together, adding to her family. Now she has relatives to "go home to". This became a fun tune with visions of lots of people from near and far gathering next to a river to celebrate their existence … 4 million years later. Oh, what we don't know.

Unearthing Our Own

I wrote this in 2006 after reading an article on some new finds of human remains that are 4 million years old in Ethiopia, I felt inspired to begin a collection of tunes based on the idea that ancient people tell their stories every time an anthropologist writes of our curious ways, then and now.

After I began this series I saw a documentary about some even older human fossils found in the northwest African area called Chad. These date back six or seven million years. Many in the scientific community think this skull could be in the time period of when humans and apes diverged from one another.

So, I began thinking of an idealized picture of the first ape to stand up and walk for the rest of his or her (probably her 😉) life. The rest of the group were uncomfortably shocked and thought her to be behaving oddly. She didn't worry about it. She thought it natural. Soon another, inspired by her strength, stood and followed. Pretty soon there was a split in the population; those who walked upright and those who didn't. Each group went their own way. Total divergence occurred. Neither ever looked back.

This collection of bare bones is called Ultimately Fossil.
