Safeway Parking Lot (Long Beach, California)

This spontaneously created lyrical ode was influenced by a 7 year unofficial artistic and musical sponsorship that effectively ended for Lorise and James (in the months prior to the recording of this spontaneous song), when their dear friend and artistic patron, Jacob Sokoloff of Jacob’s Musical Chimes, moved to a home for elderly care, and they lost their residence in Long Beach. Prior to that, Jacob played a powerful role in preparing Lorise to respond musically and lyrically to the challenges she’s faced in adapting to the Hawaiian Islands, and especially Maui, where she and James were challenged through various interactions with security and police officers. The spontaneously created lyrics reference Lorise’s year of acting training (at the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts) with Andy Robinson, who played “Scorpio,” a serial killer, opposite Clint Eastwood, in the influential 1971 film, “Dirty Harry,” one of the first of its kind to explore the motives of a serial killer; (Robinson shared with her class his story of having to retreat from his life as a working actor to balance the energy his part in the film invoked). The lyrics also reference various other biographical experiences that influenced Lorise’s continued interest and relationship with the performing arts, including a 2014 incident with the LAPD, where afterward a representative from the LAPD called her and James about an “investigation” they were doing (in response to the public nature of the incident), but later Chief Beck stated in a public interview with Larry Mantle that  “Watts initiated a personnel complaint;” https://laist.com/shows/airtalk/lapd-chief-beck-takes-your-questions-on-watts-case-troubled-union-talks-and-more. The discrepancy between what Watts had perceived happened and what was reported in the news caused her to suffer from PTSD, and retreat to Jacob’s house in Long Beach, where she was able to receive—from Jacob’s awareness of linguistics, allegory, mythology, numerology, and storytelling (especially stories related to his biological family)—enlightening perspectives on how to balance the projections she and James have created, through the use of allegorical invocations of catharsis.

Influenced by a song Lorise developed in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 2019, Lorise and James worked to develop and improvise this ode in the parking lot at the mall, influenced by the humans they’d met, whose interactions with the couple caused them to excuse their behavior, and blame it on their “job.”

In Know Time (Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, Maui County, State of Hawai’i)

Having resided together for almost 13 years in houses, as nudists; living together unhoused on the Hawaiian Islands provided  Lorise and James with the immense challenge of wearing clothes for most of the day and night. After a hitch-hiking pilgrimage to visit to the drum circle (they were told was the “secret” nude beach in Maui), they processed our dismay that most everyone was wearing clothes by singing this spontaneous song that allowed them to reveal a soothing sonic similarity between the words om, own, and home.

After impulsively spending the last of the money they had on a ride to attend the LÃ DAVIDA MALO choral event at Lāhainā Luna High School, on Saturday April 12, 2025 (based on a recommendation from a security guard at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort, who was an alumni of the “oldest high school west of the Rockies”), Lorise and James felt immensely impressed by the Ohana (family) spirit they witnessed, but without the support of any Ohana, family, or shelter for themselves, could only walk to the burned out (from the Lāhainā fires in 2023) Taco Bell parking lot, at the bottom of a great hill, before they required sleep, and so did their best to hide our sleeping mat under a tree. Upon awakening, they were approached by two security guards on a golf cart, one of whom informed them that they had to leave, and that the police were on the way, before abruptly driving off. Feeling exhausted and ashamed, they walked to the grass in front of the Lahaina Cannery Mall, and doing their best to bring light to their naivety, spontaneously recorded a version of this song. After listening, several times, they recorded this song.

Since 2012, Lorise (then identified as Danièle Watts) has had the idea for a movie called Terrifying Lightness of Whiteness. Synchronistically, the video and audio she and James captured while traveling through the U.S. Hawaiian Islands matched up with the theme, concepts, and ideas for the movie idea, and so as she and James watched and edited the clips on their phone, while traveling, she shared with James this melody she heard in her head that also coincided with a theoretical end to the movie.

Still feeling rather pathetic leaving wilted flower petals on the beach as a form of offering, Lorise heard the first words to this song and pressed record.

O lunar yoga (Kāʻanapali Beach, Maui County, State of Hawai’i)

Influenced by the honor of being humorously called a “high-priestess” in the YouTube sensation, The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo (in the role of Tatiana, influenced by the real-life Danièle Lorise Watts), Lorise has continued to cultivate an interest in the various words used to invoke shared rites. While visiting the Hawaiian Islands, she read a story about the legend of Kahunas as caretakers of sacred Hawaiian rites, and the belief that they had the power to “pray people to death.” One day, after weeks of recurrent worry about her and James safety near the Lāhainā resorts, as they’d struggled with various manifested ideas in the form of recurrent characters, persona’s, and circumstances— that she perceived brought suffering to her James—she suggested they record this song together to bring about a spiritual death of those energies, so they could (as individuals) access the energetic renewal required to travel more easily.

Kuhuna Say Die (Kāʻanapali Beach, Maui County, State of Hawai’i)

During their time together in Maui, James and Lorise had avoided Kanahā Beach Park after a nude man seemingly miraculously appeared to be masterbating several feet away from them one night and then disappeared back into the dark night when they said hello and shared their names. When they returned to Kanahā Beach, and sensed a similar energy, they recorded this song as a way to call on the power of loving speech, which during the course of their invocation transformed the shared energy of their experiences with that location to the title of this SoundCloud offering: Loving’s Beach.

When the energy of Maui guided Lorise and James to commune with the unhoused humans of Kahalui,  invoking greater awareness around the inhalation of smoke became necessary. This spontaneous audio was recorded to affirm a greater sense of union with the element of smoke as balanced with reality.

When great rain came in the middle of the night in Kahalui, Lorise and James sense of being able to continue to travel outside on Maui Island was greatly challenged. When a human named Cat shared with them a song called “Star Cat With The Sparkles In It’s Eyes,” —the lyric, “with the glitter in its fur” caused Lorise to decorate James beard with golden shimmer dust—bringing sparkles to the awareness that transformation of their previous habitual comforts was required for their evolution.

Tre, an attendant at the Aumakua Kava Lounge, allowed us the grace of sharing several hours, where we charged our phone and were able to easily enter and exit the lounge, to receive new perspectives on the movie project we were constructing using our iPhone 11. During one of our breaks from the lounge, we sang this spontaneous and cathartic ode to the flora and fauna we witnessed on the adjacent street.

Reverence for their time at Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission provided Lorise and James with expansive space to consider and express a sense of renewed awe with regard to their differences in the form of this spontaneous reverie that explores the sonic connection between the words awe, duo, audio, and ah Dios!

When the remembrance of the lyrics to the Christian hymn, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms;” that describe an ever-supportive human energy, ceased to resonate with Lorise (as an effective affirmation), she changed the words to these temporarily more effective ones.

After time at the Pa’ai Chinese Cemetery allowed Lorise and James space to express grief, a hydration blessing from Crema Maui Food Truck blessed their return to Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission,  which provided space to balance their grief through the expression of this spontaneous affirmation of flow.

While at the Maui Mall we recorded the sounds that (later at the Mantokuji Zen Mission) allowed our bodies to receive the blessing of nourishment from the spinach plants that grew wild around the graves there.

The day after we were told by a security representative at the Andaz Maui Resort that security could “kick us out anytime we want,” we balanced ourselves at Ulua Beach Park allowing space to sense more expansively feelings that reminded us of trauma we were in the process of becoming aware of from our time as children. Watching the many types of birds that came to eat our crumbs on the beach gave us a sense of awe, and we observed a visceral lesson in watching how the zebra doves shared crumbles with each other in a more relaxed way than the other birds. After showering and preparing to leave the beach, Lorise sensed that without the presence of the birds, a feeling of angst returned to her body that was released through singing this spontaneous reverie that illuminated the sonic similarity between the Hawaiian word for children: “keike” and the word kick (as in “kick” us out).

After editing videos for their upcoming movie at Wailea Public Beach Park, Lorise felt that she had made a mistake in deleting an ode the couple had created in Haʻikū. Still ruminating on it during their walk to the bus stop, Lorise was brought greater enlightenment when James intestines bulged, and they stopped to recover them, and brought more joy to their sitting through an improvised recreation of the deleted song, in the process, challenging themselves to see if they could create a spontaneous haiku.

Can You Haiku? (3850 Wailea Alanui Dr, Maui County, State of Hawai’i)

Sitting for an extended time at the Maui Dharma Bell in Pa’ai brought a remembrance of a movie Lorise had watched often during her time as a child: The Sound of Music. The feeling of loss that came along with remembering childhood was followed by a nuanced impulse to record audio of this singing affirmation of love that compelled rhythmic drumming with a tree seed pod Lorise and James found and loved the sound of. Lorise and James also love the sound of roosters (a recurrent sound on the Hawaiian Islands), and after meeting a human whose name was Everyday, and his son, Everyday, James witnessed Everyday (son) making a rooster sound that he re-shared with Lorise during the recording of this audio.

After sitting, stretching, and dancing on the sidewalk, for many hours, in front of what was formerly an establishment called Old Charley’s in Pa’ai this song was recorded to bring cathartic celebration to the fantastic sensations that being there revealed.

After 5 years of estrangement, and wishing to have a loving conversation with her Mother, Gloria; Lorise and James recorded this spontaneous song to express the emotions that surfaced after they’d missed a call from Gloria.

See Turtle Lo: Say Bon (Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission, Pā’ai, Maui County, State of Hawai’i)

Though Lorise and James had been affirming (since they began living together at the Source Spiritual Center in Venice Beach, where they encountered many people who were living unhoused—13 years before the recording of this song), that the “Earth is our home;” they had avoided communing with the people they saw behind the McDonald’s in Kahului, because of their learned fear and prejudice toward humans who maintained their belongings in shopping carts, and communed near piles of seeming garbage, often blowing around the windy street. When a friendly person, they saw several times around the Island, who introduced himself as Cat, encouraged them to commune in the area behind the McDonalds, the circumstances coincided with surprisingly profound sensations of the diverse vibrations and experiences surrounding the word “homeless.” This spontaneously improvised song, provoked by the radically euphoric scent of the plumeria flowers blossoming on the street, expresses the sonic sense of resilience, humor, and ingenuity they became aware of as a result of the generosity, kindness, and creativity they felt immensely relieved to experience with there.

After the blessing of supreme cannabis flower hash was shared with Lorise and James, (while communing behind the McDonald’s in Kahului, Maui County), a sense of appetite expansion was relieved by the singing of this spontaneous ode, influenced by St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Maui County, that donates free daily meals to the public.

After a few days sitting on the grass on the street behind the McDonald’s in Kahalui, in an area stewarded by a person introduced to them as “The Captain,” Lorise and James felt a growing sense of elation with  the diverse array of humans who passed through the area, and the good humor that the Captain’s presence engendered. As day turned to night, Lorise and James met James, whose spontaneous sonic and rhythmic invocations encouraged them to record this ode to the area.

After a night’s sleep, sheltered from the rain on the terrace in front of several permanently closed shops adjacent to Tobi’s Maui Shaved Ice and Poke in Pa’ia, Lorise and James traveled by Maui County Bus to Kihei where Lorise did her best to stretch and release tension she’d acquired from improper alignment on the concrete the night before. This spontaneously created reverie allowed her to focus on the beauty surrounding her in Kalama Park, while also becoming aware of the habitual beliefs that prevented greater physical alignment.

An ode to two humans who shared great guidance with Lorise and James (that Lorise, particularly, had previously sought from her biological father), and in doing so, provided the pair with a sense of resilience to supplement the formative guidance they received from their own fathers.

There was a time when Danièle Lorise Watts was known for her mainstream American film and TV work—most notably, memorable roles on Showtime’s Weeds & FX Partners (with comedian Martin Lawrence), and Quentin Tarantino’s Academy-Award winning film, Django Unchained—and Brian James Lucas was known for his work as an award-wining culinary artist and events producer in the global vegan wellness movement. An internationally reported news story that spawned out of the two sharing love in their car —and subsequent public sex-therapy— has moved them to express themselves on SoundCloud in spontaneously improvised odes, stories, and songs celebrating the comedy of togetherness.
