This is a mix I put together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Massive Attack's third album 'Mezzanine', focusing mainly on tracks & breaks used on the Bristol group's first three albums.

This was broadcast on The Huey Show's Block Party on BBC 6 Music, Sat 22nd April 2023 (Record Store Day). This version contains the 27 minute mix that was aired, as well as an additional segment at the end that was chopped for time.

If I Only Could

Marionette amassed interest straight from the off. The record label, which was founded in 2013, hasn't conformed to traditional aesthetics or functionality of sound. Each release has been eclectic, forward thinking and conceptual in both style and formation. To date the label has released music by Deer, Laurine Frost, Maxim Wolzyn and most recently by Kilchhofer. The latter of which is the next to contribute to our slightly more abstract Wednesday mix series. 

There is little back story or information surrounding the man. His website features a minimalist assortment of drawings, sounds and obscurities. His contribution to our mix series sees him arrange a series of mystical soundscapes, stuttering percussion and disorientated earthly audio from beyond expectations.

The inaugural release for SWIMS, a new experimental-focused imprint of Cold Blow, who are releasing the LP alongside London label and NTS residents Kit Records.

French lifeguard and sonic artist Roméo Poirier’s long sold out debut tape finally gets a vinyl reissue. “Plage Arrière” is a deep sea meditation on a constellation of Greek beaches across three islands. Trumpets, echo-clicks and Harold Budd-esque shimmer piano whirl together on these seductive scapes, which recall the sub-aqeaous ambitions of Jürgen Müller or Jan Jelinek inspecting a coral reef. 

Like sand-caked postcards, or pieces of seaglass tumbled and re-engineered by their surroundings, each piece exists a keepsake from the song's namesake beach. 
These missives glide in and out of earshot, bustling like miniature engines, finely tuned and rhythmically confounding. They echo the factory sampling work of YMO on Technodelic: industrial but somehow good-natured, a symbiosis of machinery and wildlife - like an artificial reef or propeller blades smothered in algae.

Plage Arrière is Roméo’s second album this year following “Kystwerk”, where he joined forces with the Norwegian poet Lars Haga Raavand.

The album has been remastered for vinyl by Sam Annand of Esk. Building on its original artwork, the vinyl edition features new photography by Roméo himself.

Paper Gestures was originally created as an 8-channel sound work at EMS, Stockholm in 2019. The piece is based upon field recordings made across Norway over a 13-year period including sounds of military exercises with tank fire, a road surface stripping machine, breaking panes of glass, high speed trains, ultrasound recordings of stomach noises, wind whistling through vents on the Oslo underground, sliding wardrobe doors, microwaved popcorn, soap suds, bee hives, hand bells and bicycle races. 

Composed from field recordings made in Oslo, Lillestrøm, Deset, Eidsvoll, Risør, Øysang, Røros and Trondheim, Norway between 2006 and 2018.

Released 27th February, 2020.

We are beyond overjoyed to welcome Andrew Tuttle & Padang Food Tigers to the Private Eyes series, launching us into 2021 with an incredible collaborative record that was recored remotely from isolated living rooms in Australia and the United Kingdom over the course of 2020. 

Entitled ‘A Cassowary Apart’ (the themed measure for social distancing used at Cairns Airport in Far North Queensland), this release by Andrew Tuttle and the Padang Food Tigers was created entirely via email and file sharing. Communicating from Brisbane and London respectively, the exchange of ideas and was continuous throughout much of the year.

 “Given the size of the ambient banjo music scene, we’d been fans of each other’s music for a while. While we were chatting online, COVID hit and we decided to write a few songs. It worked really well [the time zone difference], because that way, when you woke up there was something for you…a little treat to start the day.” 

Andrew Tuttle dwells in a between world where five-string banjo and six-string acoustic guitar sit serenely and purposefully with shimmering waves of decay, reverberation and processed electronics. Holding a space that is abundant and generous, Tuttle makes outsider music that turns its listeners into insiders — beckoning a journey which unfolds many heart-opening moments.
