This synth stem is a group of 4 poly soft synths in Ableton, 3 Operators and 1 Analog. I used to mainly use the Subtractor synth in Reason so after making the switch to Ableton I was very into the FM Synth that is Operator. The variety of my mixing the various oscillator levels and changing the algorithms was super fun to experiment with. 

I learned synthesis by way of FM synthesis in college using the ancient software Sound Forge (version 4 or 5) so it was nice to return to it but with a much more user friendly interface.

The Analog synth was the last to be added, its the fluttery arpeggiated synth used in the verses and bridge.

This description is easily the most boring yet and its probably because I am freezing to death in my studio. Its 43 degrees F in here. Where are my gloves for my dumb hands?

COMPOSITION NOTES:
The lyrics and vocal melody for the hook in the chorus popped into my head in August of 2010. The last Whartscape festival had just finished and I was doing a residency in the Netherlands that wasn't going exactly as planned, to put it politely.

Whartscape was a DIY festival in Baltimore that I had organized for five years but it was becoming so large in both size and undertaking that I knew it had to be laid to rest. While it had been more successful than I had ever hoped and I booked all my favorite bands to play it over the years, it still felt as if it ended before its time in many ways and when it was all over, I felt a void. In reality that void was probably just the withdrawal from my stress addiction that the Bromst tour caused coupled with Whartscape but luckily the residency I was on took over for that.

Anyway, the hook stuck with me for a while and, in 2013, I tried pairing it with a track I was working on for some Ableton Operator synths and some chopped up tabla drums. The melody fit and so the merger was made.

While I had experimented with many different options, I was without a vocal pattern or lyrics for the verse until July of 2014. Al Schatz, my good friend/sound engineer/member of thesick band Wume, had used the recently purchased label maker to print a sweet 'TOM PETTY' label and put it on the rack of compressors and shit next to my mix position. So I kept thinking about Tom Petty. I took a break from writing lyrics to watch some Tom Petty videos and then (while totally crushing it in 2048) I was just singing gibberish and nonsense when the 'visions' lyrics and vocal melody started to come out. I quickly sketched them out and tried singing them over the track.

I had never sang in that low register before but after trying several others it ended up being the one I enjoyed the most. 

PRODUCTION NOTES:
The vocoder is the internal Ableton vocoder with a blending of several custom soft-synths patches for their Analog synth and one that mimics a mellotron.

The chorus was tracked using a varispeed technique paired with the gender adjustment of the Antares auto-tuner that mimics the changing of the length of throat.  Those two techniques paired together create that surreal sounding female voice that sounds very little like my original voice and nothing at all like my pervious technique of pitch-shifting using my old friend and goto pedal, the Digitek Whammy.

A Neumann U 87 was used for all the vocals including those used as the modulator.
