‘ENIGMA, the story of Alan Turing’

ENIGMA tells the story of the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954). With his brilliant analytic mind, Turing had a gift for designing ‘intelligent’ machines. During World War II, he managed to break the Enigma code. The German air and naval forces used this code to secure all their communications. He shortened the war and saved many lives. His scientific contributions are still noticeable to this day. In the 1950s, Turing was arrested for homosexuality, a crime that was still actively prosecuted at the time. His death also remains a curious mystery.

ENIGMA vertelt het verhaal van de Britse wiskundige Alan Turing (1912-1954). Turing had met zijn briljante analytische geest een gave voor het ontwerpen van ‘intelligente’ machines. Hij slaagde er tijdens Wereldoorlog II in om de Enigma-code te kraken – de code waarmee de Duitse lucht- en zeemacht alle communicatie beveiligde. Hij bekortte hiermee de oorlog en kon vele mensenlevens redden. Zijn wetenschappelijke bijdragen zijn tot op vandaag nog steeds merkbaar aanwezig. In de jaren ‘50 werd Turing gearresteerd wegens homoseksualiteit, een strafbaar feit dat in die tijd nog actief werd vervolgd. Ook zijn dood blijft een merkwaardig mysterie.
