Chachi Jones: Kayzio (Crunchpod, 2002)

Chachi Jones' new EP Kayzio is a dark yet playful set of tunes falling sharply on the experimental side of the IDM genre. "I wanted to get a very specific and unique sound for this recording, so most of the rhythmic sounds you hear on this CD are the result of samples taken directly from my collection of home-modified children's toys and old second hand Casio keyboards - specifically my circuit-bent Casio Rapman keyboard. Using that as the source material, I then chopped all the best bits out and fed them into my sampler where I changed the pitch and length of the samples and sequenced them into different patterns." Chachi's rhythmic pyrotechnics are set off by his decidedly more mellow, floating melodies and atmospheric sounds that take an almost dublike half-pace to his frantic drumming.

Sure, panning two oscillators from center to right/left respectively is usually a pretty quiet process. But have you ever thought about the work that actually goes into pulling two sine waves apart physically? To demonstrate this phenomena, I attached two surface transducers (one playing a 597hz tone, the other playing a 177hz tone) to a piece of aluminum, each next to a contact microphone, which is panned either 100% right or left. To take the mixed signal apart, I cut the aluminum between the two transducers with an Omax waterjet.

Atmospherics taken via an H1A hydrophone (to add low end to cut sounds) and Sennheiser 8040 (because I had an extra channel and figured why not).

Epilog Laser Cutter with 2 induction coil mics, one near the laser rail motor, the other near the laser power supply. Since the mics are in static positions, the laser rail one gets quieter over time as the rail moves farther down. At about 5 minutes in, the cutter changes from raster to vector mode, hence the long 500hz frequency sounds (since the laser was cutting at a 500hz frequency).

This one is longer than most of the samples because I will listen to that first 5 minutes over and over forever.
