How do you create the look and culture for a place you’ve never seen or can visit in real life? We’re taking a trip down memory lane to Wakanda, the fictional nation in “Black Panther,” that Hannah Beachler (“Fruitvale Station,” “Creed,” “Moonlight”) brought to life as production designer on the Marvel Studios blockbuster. “Going to Africa was a really big part of understanding that it isn’t what you think it is,” Beachler says in this exclusive interview with Marriott TRAVELER as she reveals how travel to South Africa’s Cape Town and Johannesburg influenced the final design of the cities and set pieces in the Ryan Coogler-directed superhero adventure. “It’s not what you’re told, it’s not what you think, it’s a whole different place.”
