So near the beginning of 2020, I just lost faith in music and quit. The world changed from a pandemic, and I just didn’t want to do it anymore. In 2022, I started scratching the itch a little bit with synthesizer music that would be soundtrack type stuff and did several collections of songs that nobody will probably ever hear. It was how I began to cope with everything. In 2024, at the lowest I’ve ever felt in my life, I’ve found my way back here…ten years since I started Behold the Sludge…playing…singing…trying to find myself again.

"Lost" is a joint effort with Tainted Icarus (@taintedicarus, check out his stuff!), a good friend of mine I've made over these past few weeks while working on this and "The Tear Remix". As much as he may not want to take enough of his due credit for it, this is his baby, and I'm just the catalyst that started it on the path to the finish line. These lyrics came to me making coffee one morning, and even before I knew how to structure them within the music, I jotted this down in about ten mins. It is hands down the most rewarding poem/set of lyrics I have ever written.

At some point or another, we all know this feeling...to be lost. Whether it's from confusion, doubt, or just misunderstanding, to live this life is to find one's self lost at some point or another. Sometimes, you just want to leave and lose yourself. The premise here is pretty basic. A man (or woman for that matter) essentially goes on a walk and never comes back.

When I've left this world behind me
Don't you even try to find me
Maybe I've made it to the coast
Found myself a boat
And set out on the open sea

When I've left it all behind me
Don't you dare try to remind me
Maybe I found myself a book
Took a good long hard look
And then found a fantasy

If you find the crack at all
When you open up the hole 
What you thought was so small

Stopped letting the rut bind me

“Burning Out”

Burning Out

An unnecessarily long song with no true chorus (thank/blame R.E.M. haha!) and, for the first time ever in the whole Behold the Sludge catalogue, no kind of rhyme structure whatsoever. Taking cues from everyday life, the title simply comes from me and my wife telling my daughter to stop mumbling so much.

If the thoughts all made some sense 
I’d tie it all together  
To try and explain the madness

But I never could quite fathom 
Just what they all were chasing

Through solace and dumb comfort 
The safety was a mirage 
It torched our sanctuary 
Exposed it for what it was

Embrace the aftermath 
The end of the saga 
Whatever comes after 
We still won’t understand it 
So much to comprehend 
Ignorance of common sense 
A voice beneath the surface 
You can’t escape the beast (relent)

And sometimes things just happen
We will never understand 
Put our hands on the glass 
And squeeze it til it cracks

Magnifies the gaping void
