She had boundless amounts of energy, time out simply wasn't in her vocabulary. In her opinion any moment spent doing nothing was a waste of time; she'd sleep when she's dead...

Vino connoisseur and good food appreciator Jon Beige met Records With Attitude co-boss Mouloud whilst chowing down at Le Cave in Paris' 10th District. We know, it sounds like the beginning of a beautiful love story. As the wine flowed, the pair got into chatting about music and the idea for the two tracks on Jon's newest outing Gatorade were conceived. There's a distinct nod to leftfield UK club rhythms which, in contrast to his previous releases for Global Warming which have balanced sonics for the home and the club, are both custom made for the dance floor.

The situation we’re witnessing in Gaza is heartbreaking. While the world watches, over 30,000 innocent Palestinian people, many of whom were children, have been killed and over 70,000 more injured in attacks since October 7th. Homes, neighbourhoods and cities have been destroyed, and most of the population has been displaced and left without food, clean drinking water, electricity and fuel.  

The UK government has continued to allow Israel’s bombardment in the region and chosen not to back consistent calls for a ceasefire, despite the overwhelming majority of the UK public being in favour. 

In an effort to raise money for Palestinian aid charities, I’ve reached out to lots of talented artists who have kindly contributed their music to this incredibly important cause.  

FREE PALESTINE. 

All proceeds from the compilation will be split 50/50 between two charities who are working hard to provide support and humanitarian aid in Gaza: Medical Aid Palestine and War Child UK.

Weirdies Records is proud to welcome rougail space program in the team with his first official release, like ECLT before him. This marks the second occurence in the label freshly created by Parisian boy Jon Beige already heard on labels such as Global Warming Records or R.W.A., also a Rinse France resident for a few months. The global recipe remains the same : singular music, risky and full of attitude, accompanied by a mystical visual universe signed by Louis Ziéglé.

Maxime quickly made a name for himself in Paris those last few years, via addictive edits to get started, that quickly became « SoundCloud hits ». That’s how his moniker appeared on tracklists from French techno brightest stars like Anetha, François X, Bambounou or Elise Massoni without ever having released music in an formal way. In the center of a whirlwind mixing various influences, he developed his ear from La Station bass nights to his friends GЯEG’s Rex Club residence. He became a regular in La Créole’s crowd, one of Paris’ hottest parties, and then behind the decks. In march, like an apotheosis, he literally mystified the current best club in town essaim, with an already legendary set, opening for Rroxymore and DJ Plead.

After having released some well-chosen tracks on compilations, like Jerry Horny, it was about time to sail by his own, keeping his energetic and clubby production skills without sticking to it too much. He wanted to compose something that will look like a small album where each track would have its own influences and singularity. Like a dish that mixes sweetness, bitterness, acidity, vivacity, but mostly taste, those five tracks feed off each other perfectly in changing balances. First tracks’ melancholy and depth bring an introspective, almost romantic note to the next ones, bursting with energy.

Boarding Area opens with a soft waterfall of marine notes, an organic ode to liminal spaces specific to the seabed, and continues with Late Nite Gaze, a Beatles techno getaway, that is reminiscent of Barker or Basic Channel’s work. The ground is prepared for 417 Tool, futuristic energy monolith with funny spices, a post-covid demo from Maxime enhanced Pimp My Ride’s way by Jon Beige’s sharp tools. Speaking about car tunning, Tamarin Sex, EP’s first single with bubbling and jersey influences, pays an in-your-face tribute to the « car bass » culture from his native Reunion Island. Shepherd’s Bush wrap it all up transposing those vibes threw the prism of his Parisian rides best memories.

Sylvain, qui gère La Pieuvre, est mon meilleur ami. Quand il m’a demandé de venir jouer pour sa première soirée à la Rotonde Stalingrad, je n’ai pas eu une seule micro-seconde d’hésitation. J’étais tout de même assez étonné qu’il m’inclue dans ce plateau aux tendances très futuristes, dans la mesure où ce que je joue habituellement ne colle pas franchement au reste du line-up. Il m’a dit : « tu feras la fin ». J’ai commencé à imaginer ce que je pourrais bien passer après Evil Grimace, qui lui, probablement, jouera des morceaux carrément musclés. 

J’ai donc commencé à mettre des morceaux de côté, et je me suis vite aperçu que le thème récurrent, c’était la musique de club plutôt extrême, maximaliste, et surtout pas (trop) ancrée dans le passé, à quelques exceptions près. Dans un sens je suis content, ça colle assez bien à ma vision de la musique en général. J’adore écouter de vieux truc, je suis même plutôt favorable à ce mouvement des rééditions. Mais je trouve que la musique électronique stagne un petit peu ces temps-ci. 90% de la musique que j’entends en club aujourd’hui date d’il y a 20 ans au moins, ou alors en reprend exactement les mêmes codes. J’ai alors pris cette histoire de mixtape comme une sorte de manifeste, un haut et fort : « EN AVANT ! ». 

Pour faire ce mix, j’ai tout simplement pioché dans cette sélection de 200 morceaux que je m’étais faite. J’en suis assez satisfait, parce que ça change complètement de mon style de prédilection. Mais d’ailleurs, plus j’avance, et plus je me dis que je n’en ai pas, et ça me plait comme ça. Parfois j’aime jouer des trucs cheesy et du disco, parfois des trucs trippants et lents, et parfois, comme ici, des trucs injouables. Il paraît que « c’est la mode » de jouer de tout, je trouve ça abbérant. 

Sur le mix en lui-même, j’ai assez vite eu l’idée de commencer ET de finir par ce morceau de Elg, qui m’a vraiment marqué la première fois que je l’ai écouté. Ca m’a tout de suite rappelé l’atmosphère de Twin Peaks saison 3. Du coup, le fait d’ouvrir et de fermer par ça, ça donne un côté un peu rêve et irréel au tout. Pour le reste, je sais franchement pas quoi dire d’autre … J’ai choisi en « premier » ce morceau de Yaleesa Hall parce qu’il pose direct des bases énergiques, et après, j’ai vraiment procédé au feeling, à essayer de sentir quel morceau pourrait bien aller avec celui-ci, et ainsi de suite, jusqu’à la fin. Parfois j’ai le point A et le point B en tête, là je n’avais que le point A.

Mixmag x La Pieuvre Mix

On January 22nd, I was invited (in fact, I invited myself) to play a one-off set in the @lyl_radio studios in Paris. I was very hot about it, because it's the webradio that matches my tastes the most. So worked hard to prepare a nice mix. 

But I forgot to bring a second USB key (the turntables aren't linked there). I was about to play in 10 minutes when I realised that, so Marine, who runs Lyl Paris, gave me an emergency USB. I couldn't manage to put all the tracks I intented to play, but I started on time. My mix wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I intented to play in the first place. And finally, the uploading din't work. 

So this week-end, I re-recorded it, in its "original version", and here it is. Never forget to bring an emergency USB guys. Tracklist below :
