A melodic reflection piece of snapshots growing up as a kind on the west end of Toronto. A soft approach to hard realities being expressed over a set of keys and chants, allows for this reflection piece to be an ode to our coming of age experiences as people.

Intro: Sage Space

On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, was murdered during a racially motivated hate crime while jogging in Satilla Shores, a neighborhood near Brunswick in Glynn County, Georgia.

I wrote this song in response to a reoccurring theme of hate crimes a lot of black men had faced at the hands of the very justice system we invest in as a society to protect as well as serve the community. 

As a kid, I was exposed to the extremities of gun violence and police brutality as a youth growing up in Toronto’s public housing from the age of 8 to 19 in the Jane & Finch community.

You find yourself feeling survivors guilt and in response to the loss of youth to gun violence in my area as well as peer groups, I became a storyteller to approach these subject matters from a place of creative protest. My pen became a sword to the adversities I persevered from. 

I wrote this song as a vulnerable and reflective piece to where my heart was as a human being and artist during the height of police related shootings the took the lives of many black men in America

“Langston Hues Interlude”

With a mix of excerpts from a Langston Hughes reciting his poetry. His work are deep reflections of his lived experience growing up during the Harlem Renaissance. I took the time to find inspiration from his poetry to write this song. 

As black artists, we find that our capabilities as storytellers to describe our experience in detail becomes quite abstract as we develop as human beings. The diversity of the black experience is so vast and as artist our work is an expression of ourselves

This is ode to finding a intersection between the old and the new to tell the stories we share from a different point of view.
