2 Pieces for Cello and Piano

These are two short pieces that I wrote in mid 2014, initially it began as one piece with three movements, but this revised version has been cut down to two short pieces that could be played as a set, or as individuals.

The first piece is a melancholic lament, and the second is a release of aggression and anger.

Lost within the Labyrinth

“Even those who leave the labyrinth never escape it, forever dreaming of their time trapped within.”

The piece is written in three distinct sections:
1. “The ever changing labyrinth” - a fast movement for guitar and ensemble; relentless and ever growing in its frustration.

2. “The heart of the maze”
- a slow movement in which the harp takes centre-stage; tranquil and serene,and yet still unnerving.

3. “No escape.”
- a fast and furious movement for the entire ensemble; complete panic.

Lost Within The Labyrinth

This piece is a showcase for guitar, harp and chamber ensemble, concerto-esque in structure.

There are three distinct sections:

This is a collection of 4 songs written specifically for the Seraphim Ensemble based in Glasgow. It was a project to create pieces of music, to be performed for children with special educational needs. The pieces are based on poetry by Hilaire Belloc.

A collection of piano miniatures, each one attempting to capture water in its many different forms.

1. Reflections - "the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it”

2. Rain - "the condensed moisture of the atmosphere falling visibly in separate drops”

3. Ripples - "a small wave or series of waves on the surface of water, especially as caused by a slight breeze or an object dropping into it"

4. Waves - "a long body of water curling into an arched form and breaking on the shore”

5. Cloudburst - “A sudden violent rainstorm”

6. Blue Silence - "of a colour intermediate between green and violet, as of the sky or sea on a sunny day” - "complete absence of sound"
