A note and a Key

As we approach the holiday season, carols will soon fill the air alongside larger works like Handel’s oratorio, "Messiah," which is a favorite of mine. When I was a child, my parents played Handel’s music in our home during the holidays, and in college, I sang his well-known works with the rest of our chorale.  

One movement, “All We Like Sheep,” makes me think of the biblical parable about the Good Shepherd, who leaves his flock to rescue one sheep that wanders off. I love this story for a number of reasons, but especially because it conveys the message that everyone matters to God, even when we wander and become lost. This parable, found in Luke 15 and Matthew 18, provided the inspiration for my composition, "The Rescue."

The first 25 seconds tell the story of the sheep wandering off, while the rest of the music follows the shepherd’s lengthy search. Throughout the piece, you will hear a recurring major chord that signifies a glimmer of hope as the shepherd continues his search. The shepherd nears the end of his journey when the music begins to slow down, and the very last chord represents the moment of discovery and rescue. The lost sheep is finally found and gently cradled in the shepherd's arms to return home.

The Rescue

'Living In The Red Dust' A Daoist term, 'Red Dust. is the view that the vast majority of the population of Planet Earth are either involved in and/or are oblivious to, the wars, genocide, poison of earth, water and air of our planet. Those of us who are exempt from either camp, must still live in the 'Red Dust'. So this track featuring Georg on winds, soloing and wind ensemble arranging, is our acknowledgement of the above grievances to the planet and all life on it, that we  both share.

Then She Reaches for the Gun was formed in 2021 by Mat Ward. At its essence is sound collage, Ward invites musicians, sound artists, poets and anyone interested to send him files to be used, abused and showcased ‘as suggested by the work’. They are not always musical but field recordings, spoken word, engine noises and drunken rants. Animals participate a lot too! The raw material is arranged with one phrase asking for the next in an alchemical and intuitive process that will most often feature dozens of tracks weaving in and out of each other, colliding, harmonising, arguing and laughing along the way.

Both the aesthetic and the compositional methods use what Frank Zappa called Xenochrony - the mixing together of separately recorded and rhythmically opposing musical phrases to create polyrhythmic and polytempi compositions.The work also features fragmented story telling with the human voice (in many languages) appearing unannounced throughout the tracks offering up snippets of thoughts, conversations, jokes and existential angst. The absurdity of humanities desperate claim to have any real understanding of its place in the universe is revealed through the recorded follies and genuine emotions of the artists. The project is a celebration of chance, diversity and community. It pays homage to all musical tastes and genres whilst maintaining a sense of humour and irreverence that is needed to stay sane in the climate of 21st Century contemporary culture.

Unser Podcast Nummer 83 kommt diese Woche von niemanden Geringerem als von der bezaubernden und umwerfenden Mira. 

Lange Jahre beeinflusste Mira die ost-deutsche Techno-Szene bevor sie vor ca. 10 Jahren ihre musikalische Heimat in der legendären BAR25 in Berlin, später Kater Holzig und jetzt Kater Blau fand. Während ihrer Zeit in Berlin hat sie ihren ureigenen Sound geformt, der an endlose Nächte voller Wunder und Gefühlstiefe erinnert.

In der Bar25 war es auch, wo sich Miras Wege zum ersten Mal mit Chris Schwarzwalder, NU und Jo Ke kreuzten; daraus entstanden sind nicht nur lebenslange Freundschaften sondern auch kreativer musikalischer Austausch, Kooperationen und ein nicht enden wollender Output an toller Musik.

Jeder, der selbst schon einmal in den Genuss ihrer endlosen Sets gekommen ist, versteht sofort warum ganz Berlin ihren speziellen Sound so sehr schätzt. Warm und  hypnotisierend geht er unter deine Haut und lässt dich mit einem Gefühl tiefer Verbundenheit zurück.

Just came back from our showcases in Shanghai and Beijing, and I am feeling super invigorated. Being able to converse in Mandarin with Howie Lee and the Do Hits! crew certainly brought us closer together, and we are currently planning a quarterly residency with them in Beijing - Keep an eye out for that, but in the meantime, soak up the latest IN 30. Slightly rough around the edges in certain segments, but hey there's the beauty of improvisation. I hope you enjoy the selections nonetheless.
