It’s a song about struggle, might it be personal, relational or political. That’s up for the listener to decide. Even though I like writing diferent kind of music I would label this song “A catchy modern pop-tune with folk influences and rooted in late 70’s punk-scene”.

As somewhat of a contrast, in the second song “I’m not the only one” the listener gets hit with a finger picked jazz guitar accompanied by old school synth arpeggios. As if that wasn’t jazzy enough the second bar of the intro offers a crazy 5/4 beat to keep the listener (and the drummer) alert. The arrangement then leans towards a quite classic Swedish indie pop sound but keeps it’s originality throughout the whole song and gets flavored with some moog-synths, organ and choirs worthy of a Catholic cathedral. The religiousness ends with the choirs and instead the bittersweet lyrics takes the listener inside the mind of a young man gone astray, fighting his demons but lucky enough to have someone fighting together with him side by side.

With a drum intro worthy off “Spin Doctors” The EP starts off with “Rely on me”. This guitar driven and upbeat indie rock tune doesn’t hide its influences from the late 70’s punk scene, despite the fact that it was originally written as an acoustic folk song as a birthday present to the artist’s wife. The muted guitar in the verses opens up and explodes in the chorus together with goodies like a Hammond Organ and football stand choirs. Together with the declaration of love that makes up the lyrics this song is for sure going to put a smile on the listeners face.

The Street Where I Was Born

The reason I made this song is a competition held by the label Yunizon and the new platform Emanate to promote the release of the single “Tables Have Turned” by the artist Ralph. Most people chose to take the voice and instruments from the original version to do a remix, but I wanted to make the song my own. So I took the melody and harmonics and changed them up a little bit to better fit my style of acoustic guitar. Then I added some strings instruments to the arrangement and finally I ended up with a version that was above my own expectations.

I then sent the song in as my entry for the competition, together with over 170 other entries. So even though I was pretty happy with the end result, I didn’t have that much hope of winning.

So, to my surprise, some weeks later when I got an e-mail that announced I was among the 10 entries that was considered to win some of the three top prices. And in the end I didn’t end up top 3, but no less than first runner up, and I couldn’t be more happy.

Tables Have Turned

Jon Magnusson is a songwriter/musician/producer/audio engineer from Stockholm, the picturesque capital of Sweden. The music he writes and plays is often plain folk with a touch of rock and punk influences and an occasional jazzy beat thrown in to keep listeners on their toes.
