SEER Your Shot 2023: Heavy DnB & Dubstep Mix

Excited to share my heavy bass set from opening for BADVOID at Bass Cave on December 9 at Tokyo Sing Song in Newtown! This was my first time booking a live gig and it was so much fun. SEER is a bass DJ in Eora/Sydney. Her sets aspire to reflect her deep appreciation for a DJ's power to tell stories, wield energy and create a united cathartic experience. She particularly loves sets which play on the unexpected and keep a crowd captivated and guessing.

"I'm definitely still learning to embrace the role of being a DJ, let alone female DJ. Recently a remark from a veteran male DJ suggesting I should ‘put some make up on and dress up’ to secure more gigs prompted me to reflect on the expectations placed on female DJs and the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) biases that can persist.

The identity dilemmas we can face are real: should we lean into femininity to be perceived as desirable, or should we conform to a male-dominated culture to earn respect? Surely we can forge our own path without falling into either extreme. These questions aren’t limited to DJing either, they resonate across many areas of our lives.

The music we select as DJs can also carry weight. In private, I can listen to songs with misogynistic lyrics because I know I can detach from them, but playing them publicly could inadvertently endorse a harmful culture, which I'd then be profiting from too.

I hope that, in sharing some of my own fears as I begin to navigate my way through this space, I can shed some light on the pressures and imposter feelings many of us can face."

Round 22: SEER for BKiND Music

i was honoured to submit this mix to BKiND to celebrate and feature female djs!
i really appreciated this opportunity to reflect on what it means to me to be a female dj as i begin to navigate this space, and what it might mean for other female djs who i greatly respect. see below for some reflections i wrote for the original BKiND post (page linked below!)

i personally found the lyrics in these songs to be reflective of how the complex female ego (represented in the moody and highly emotional trap) is often in a struggle against the inherent and powerful feminine energy and life force (reflected in the interspersed majestic and euphoric bass drops). by the end both sides merge and it becomes difficult to see where one ends and the other begins. it was also so freeing to experiment in this mix without the pressures of preparing for a live set (where you often need to hop from drop to drop) and be able to feature beautifully intricate songs, letting them shine and build energy on their own. if you enjoy a slow burn, then this mix is for you!

SEER is a multi-genre heavy bass dj located in Sydney/Eora but with roots in Aotearoa/New Zealand. She dabbles in everything from dubstep, heavy trap and dnb to bass house, future bass and techno. 
SEER has supported artists like Samplifire, Cessco, The Prototypes, Jacknife and BADVOID, playing at events across the local Sydney bass scene.

She is inspired to create intentional sets which wield energy, presence and emotionality, aiming to contribute something fresh, explorative and boundary pushing to keep herself and her audiences on their toes

Shook Guest Mix #28 - SEER

This mix is a condensed version of the set I did for Requiem, a dnb event in Sydney a few weeks ago, and fuses dnb, halftime, jungle, bass and techno

It’s quite different from some of my other mixes in that it’s more minimal by nature. Most of my other mixes have focused on maintaining high energy—in hopping from drop to drop to keep audiences dancing. But with this set, I got to play more with pacing and by building the energy slowly and intentionally. I hope you enjoy! 🤗
