enchanting vocals - I like the bass line too - drives this song forward

Amelia Rivas and Christian Pinchbeck don't just sing about feverish, frayed and  fractured romances – in the three years since forming  Elephant, they've been living one.

Their first recordings, recorded in the strung out early mornings after the night before, were delirious and light-headed. Rivas’ stream of conscious lyricism combined with Pinchbeck’s innate melodic nous to create vignettes of delight and wonder.  A debut single followed, 2011’s woozy Ants, followed by the Assembly EP.   But before they had a chance to capitalise on the growing acclaim around them the duo’s relationship broke down, almost to the point of no return.

That seemed to be Elephant’s graveyard.  Yet an unexpected rapprochement in late 2012, and a renewed musical hunger saw Rivas and Pinchbeck reconcile.  The first fruit was this year’s gauzy single Skyscraper, which announced their return in spectacular fashion, with Rivas’ swooping vocals allied to a spectral chorus creating an eerie, lens-flared 3 minute wonder of song.

Now, new release Shapeshifter provides confirmation that Elephant are truly back as a force to be reckoned with. “I flew to the moon to mirror you and I saw the future” sings Rivas, with a raw melancholy and nostalgic longing. A sumptuous missive of love lost and lessons learned, that sparkles with charm, optimism, and the sort of lush swoonsome string arrangements that reach into your chest and wring your heart dry. 

Backed by the sparse and stretched out Snowday, as icily cool as it sounds, full of chiaroscuro contrasts and flickering atmospherics, it’s a release that suggests their debut album is set to be one of the standout albums of 2014.

Steady Holiday is Dre Babinski. Until now you could find her playing in bands around LA, opening for big tent stuff like Fitz and the Tantrums and Fun dot, and making a record with some friends from Dr. Dog. She enjoyed the sidewoman life, but longed for an outlet of her own, writing and recording in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Under the Influence is her coming out party, featuring Josh Adams (Jenny Lewis) and produced by Gus Seyffert (The Black Keys, Beck), set for release June 24th on Infinite Best (Mr Twin Sister, Ava Luna). First single “Your Version of Me” was released to immediate praise, garnering 200,000+ streams, and caught the attention of Coachella/Goldenvoice founder Paul Tollett, who added the band to Coachella 2016. Steady Holiday will play a residency at the Satellite in LA every Monday in June, come hang.

Belle Mare is a collaboration between songwriters Amelia Bushell and Thomas Servidone. The duo met at an open mic in Brooklyn during the winter of 2012, and recorded an EP that was released the following year.  
With the addition of Tara Rook (Keyboards), Rob Walbourne (Drums) and Gary Atturio (Bass), Belle Mare performed a live video session at Manhattan’s Electric Lady Studio, at which they caught the attention of Grammy-winner Tom Elmhirst and Ben Baptie.
Elmhirst offered the band his studio at Electric Lady to record with Baptie as producer, and began work on what will be their debut full-length album, with sessions spanning the better part of two years. Now set to arrive late summer 2016.
The first fruits of those sessions came to light last year with the singles, “Cicada”, released in February, which BULLETT called, “the most beautiful song of the month,” and “Dark Of My Evening” in November, a ‘Track of the Week’ by Interview Magazine.  Belle Mare also collaborated with director Nicole Mackinlay Hahn on the video for “Cicada”, which premiered via The New York Times’ T Magazine last April, chronicling a stunning journey of the women of Burkina Faso.
While preserving the foundations of their songwriting and maintaining the stark minimalism of their previous work, Belle Mare’s first album is new territory for the band. Compositionally diverse arrangements, and instrumentation more in line with their live performances, resulted in a far more expansive sound. Although the results are dramatically different, the sincerity and fragility of Bushell’s voice resonates distinctly throughout the album, as do the themes of longing and the passage of time.
Prior to their full length, Belle Mare released the aforementioned EP, The Boat of the Fragile Mind in April of 2013. A collection of eight songs described as “spaciously eerie” by SPIN. The EP was written and recorded by the duo in the modest confines of Servidone’s Brooklyn apartment. It is a strikingly different experience from the Electric Lady recordings, conjuring “a sense of timeless unbeholden to a specific time.” (Eric Danton, Listen Dammit).
