Catch the magic of LA rave icons @Thee-O and @Ben-Annand in an unplanned b2b set at the Tropikroma Campout in Santa Clarita in August 2023!

This outdoor event survived a location shift the week of the party and crazy weather brought in by hurricane Hilary that canceled every other event, leaving Tropkroma as the last event standing.

The night was an homage to perseverance among the three organizers collaborating on the event - Tropical, Terrakroma, and The Gathering, ChinoSound who provided crystal clear Danley sound, and the 100 or so die-hard dancers that braved the first ever hurricane to hit LA - in August no less - and dance at this magical event in the trees.

Because we knew that rains would come in heavily in the late morning we made some shifts in the schedule.  Most notable was to move Thee-O's morning set into a combined nighttime back to back set with Ben Annand.

Thee-O is one of the most prolific LA DJs of all time, possibly playing the most total sets of any LA underground DJ from the 90s til now.  Ben also has an impressive DJ resume in addition to being the founder and vision behind Tropical, one of LA's most consistent, well-known and well-loved little underground events :)

There is no shortage of history between these two iconic LA underground warriors... At Ben's very first LA DJ gig for an outside promoter in 1996, he opened for Thee-O at Hollywood's infamous Gotham Club.  Ben DJed as Mr. Annand back then and is listed as such on the title for sake of nostalgia :)

The two have played together frequently since, and Thee-O has been a featured guest at Tropical parties in California, Oregon, and Hawaii.

Note how this set flows almost perfectly through a variety of styles between the 2 DJs switching every 4 tracks.  Hopefully this unexpected collaboration between Thee-O and Ben Annand will not be the last!

Only because I had released a set with similar vibes right before playing. 

This was a really fun winter party - in fact I had a rather sketchy drive home to Eugene in a snowstorm...

Been meaning to put this one out there for a while.  In 2024, I'm dedicated to putting out more mixes so here ya go!

132 BPM Progressive-leaning techno mix :)

I wasn't expecting to be left at quite this fast a tempo but I'm glad I was :)  Only my Moontribe mixes tend to get over 130 like this, so it was a rare chance to spread my wings.

Deseract puts on a really cool party and the space, sound, lighting, and deco were all on point here.  It felt super underground and all my friends had a great time here.  

Hope you like the mix!  I'd love to play more sets like this :)

From 0 bpm to 67 winding up to 126 and then back to stillness

Ambient - Downtempo - House - Techno - Broken Beat  - Progressive - House - Ambient

It's an extended journey just over 3 hours so longer then normal Ecstatic Dance formet.  And more 4/4 than most Edance but there is broken house and downtempo and evena Drum and Bass track in the mix

Thirty five years of professional DJing this summer! 

I have spent many past posts musing about the early days, so I will spare you words of nostalgia today. Instead, I want to hit you with the kind of set that I feel is an accumulation of my past experiences of what works on a dance floor, what I personally love, and which of those sounds I feel connect with what's happening today. 

Music has largely stopped giving us anything truly new in the past decade, but the absence of newness doesn't mean we shouldn't discover music that is new to US, and sometimes we should also remind ourselves of the great eras, genres and grooves we may have forgotten. So today, instead of giving you newness, I present to you my musical opinion on contemporary timelessness.

I would personally dance my ass off to this set. LMK if you would too.

This is the second in the ‘Musique Éthérée Provoquant la Réflexion’ series of mixes and it continues with the more experimental sounds of Drum & Bass, Breaks, Jungle, and Ambient music. Biography:

In his zone from deep house to techno, Ben Annand pairs impeccably smooth mixing skills with a dynamic style that keeps the music moving, artfully playing with breakdowns and spending most of his time in the mix.

“For me, a great mix is the interplay of 2 unique pieces of music, creating something greater than the sum of the parts - and a great set weaves those mixes into a musical flow you can’t help but lose yourself in on the dance floor.”

Ben fell in love with dancing and rave culture in 1995, and learned to mix in 1996. Just 2 years later he became resident dj at the famed Moontribe Gathering, and started his own production company, Tropical. The first half of his career was mostly focused on DJing abroad, with 13 trips to Moscow’s Propaganda club, travel across Russia, Spain, and Mexico, an appearance at Wiggle at Fabric in London and two at the Labyrinth Festival in Japan.  

In more recent years, Ben Annand became a top West Coast festival DJ, and recently played a standout set at his 5th consecutive Lightning in a Bottle (CA). He has also appeared at Sunset Campout and Desert Hearts (CA), Oregon Eclipse (OR), Photosynthesis and Cascadia (WA), Shambhala and Motion Notion (BC, Canada).

As organizer of Tropical, he's donated over $32,000 to charity, hosted zero-waste events in Hawaii, and presented gender-balanced dj lineups.

Whatever his project,, Ben Annand is always contributing, and always thinking outside the box.
