Ben Annand Techno Sets

This is a mostly techno set from Monday, August 19th Full Moon Gathering in the trusty Mojave Desert.  After a late start this was actually recorded from 2:15 to 4:30am.  The photo up now is by Chirstopher Kristoff, it is from around 6am, I was on the dance floor at that point.  Have not seen any night photos of the event yet

For this set I dug back a couple of years - sometimes I buy something for Moontribe and it gets lost because I have nowhere else to play it in my current set of gigs.  So this about half and half mix of my current techno favorites from the summer and things I've been storing up.

I do hope you enjoy this set!  It comes towards the end of a rather incredible summer for me, you can find a lot of the other highlights in my Soundcloud by scrolling down my now UNLIMITED account :)

Ben Annand live at Moontribe in the Mojave Desert, Monday, August 19, 2013

Like many friends, I'm missing Matthew Parkey from the physical world today.  

The soul of the desert, Matthew was always friendly and inclusive.  Always.  At a time when I felt I was told to be playing this way or that in the desert, he allowed me to be free.  At a time when I was not feeling included, he made me feel home.

His events, to me, were the first notable series of desert events outside of fmg.  They were not perfectly organized by any means but they were definitely organized with love by one of the most loving people I knew, and I think that's what stuck with most of us.  He was definitely a visionary, and in more recent years he spent much of his time making music.  

I always deal with pain and loss with music, so this evening I will release my set from one of Matthew's events, Beora, in Oct 2014.  I think it's my favorite set I played for him.

This set is a nighttime set despite the picture, one of the few sets I started with an ambient track but it's definitely techno from 2 minutes in

Rest in power Matthew Parkey, I wlll be looking for your light when I gaze up at the Moon and Stars <3

Ben Annand Live at Beora Oct 2014, In Memory of Matthew Parkey

My return to Moontribe after 4 years!  Hey it ain't so easy to pull off living in Oregon... but good news, my venue booking business has me in California at least once a month so far this year :)

Anyway, it was great to be back!  For a March Full Moon this was a little more intimate than I was expecting - still a few hundred people there on a beautiful Thursday night though!

Musically this is on the faster,(130bpm) harder end of my range.  I did also slip in some breakbeats at the beginning and in the middle.

A lot of people haven't heard me play this style, and I always get a couple surprised comments when I play like this.  It's good to keep people on their toes!

I'll post the track list soon, but it takes a minute, and I wanted to get this up before it gets late :)  

I had a really great time here, and I danced for hours.  It was the first time I'd been in front of a huge system since the pandemic, sounded so good out there!

Ben Annand Live at Precision March 9, 2014 (Techno Set - 128 BPM)

Recorded live Friday night at the 10th and final Esthetic Evolution Festival in Twin Springs, Idaho.  

It was an honor to play at both last year’s and this year’s EE parties!

For my set I went back through my music collection in honor of the 10 years of the festival and played a relatively classic set mixed through 10 years of music rather than my usual ‘fresh off the press’ offering :)

Sad to see such great party end but have a feeling that the end of an old favorite will be followed with the beginning of something new ;) Such a beautiful spot and beautiful experience there the past 2 years.

Big thank-you to everyone involved in this great production for having me up again!



Live at Esthetic Evolution 10, Twin Springs, Idaho, June 20, 2014

Recorded live at Stilldream Festival in beautiful Belden Town, CA this set gets right down to business and is at the hard end of Mr. Annand's music spectrum.  

The set closed the techno stage Sunday morning 4:30-6:00am  and winds down from 132 to about 129 bpm

It was the last gig on the summer Annand Family Tour, after driving that same day from Portland to Chico with the fam, continuing solo to play at Heartbass in Nevada City 12-2, then driving the 2 hours to Belden to play this set.

It was so great to be back at Full Moon Gathering to celebrate 31-Year Anniversary!

26 of those years I have been an active Moontribe resident DJ, but it had been almost 2 years since my last visit.  Living in Oregon  makes things difficult, the stars have to align just right... and they did!

This is one of my favorite sets I've played!  I dug hard through my music, taking advantage of a months-long process of organizing and labeling my entire music collection.

Ben Annand Live at Moontribe FMG 31-Year Anniversary (3-hr techno set)

Recorded 5am-7am, under a Full Moon eclipse into the sunrise!  Was planning a fully night set here but this worked out perfectly as the first 1 hour 15 were in darkness with the moon just on the way back from the eclipse, and the morning sun coming up in the final 45.  

I hadn't played FMG at night in about a year and a half so this was really exciting for me!  Brought out the weird trippy techno, a bunch of it brand new.  Didn't have much time to mix before the gig so spent my precious time organizing the tracks by energy, I think it worked really well.

Actually I haven't listened to this all the way through as I am getting ready to leave town, but I remember it being good :)  Looking forward to listening fully soon!

This is a hot new techno mix that I played at Deck 22 in Tijuana for Baja Burner!  Super fun party and crowd, I had a great time there and felt the love from everyone <3  Thanks to Jorge Del Rio for bringing me!

Funny that I played in Mexico City, Acapulco, Guadalajara, Palenque, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Canyon de Guadalupe, and Ensenada before Tijuana, which is actually the closest Mexican city to my home in Los Angeles, but that's exactly what happened!

In any case, from my long history playing in Mexico I know it's a great place to play music for people, and also that they like it a little on the harder, trippier side, so that's what you have hear, a trippy techno set that still maintains elements of funkiness in the bassliness, hope you like it!

I'm on a techno kick in January and good timing because it's been a while since I put out an intense one like this on Soundcloud.

When I lived in Socal, Moontribe was the place I could play like this :)
But can't make that much anymore.  

I never would have thought I could get away with this set in Sacramento. But the Lost in Groove team has cultivated something special there.  And it was full moon!

Sacratechno!

Proof is in the pudding
If you cultivate a crowd with good underground music they will grow to love it
Be it house or techno or whatever

You just have to do it, don't pander to what you think people want
It might take a little time
But it's worth it

Ben Annand 2020 Techno Set (Live At Technosaic In Sacramento 1-11-20)

In my new studio mix series I want to offer some mixes in different genres, and with a little different feel than you might get from a live mix.

I've been exploring tracks I don't play out much or else in a long time, that are not necessary dance-driven but more interesting conceptually...

This first mix is a techno mix which starts gently and escalates quickly before coming back down to a nice close.

It would be a lot to ask a dance floor to have this much change in energy but this isn't for the dance floor necessarily

It's more a reflection of the chaos all of us feel in our lives right now.

I've done a few LiveStreams, all house, and really been dying to play some techno.

This set even started as a livestream, but had some tech issues so I just played for my wife an I, and opened up a bit more musically than I probably would have if live

Anyway, hope you are well out there wherever you are!

An absolutely amazing event in it's 9th year, you can tell Esthetic Evolution is a muture festival by the sheer number of things going on there.  3 sound domes operating only at night and into the sunrise:  one low-tempo, one chill In the center), and one 4/4.  I played in the 4/4 of course!  During the day music is handled by different sound camps while the main systems rest - I think there were 4 of them.  In the chill dome during the day there was an awesome dance workshop which was really great and different.  

Other highlights were a huge glowing dinosaur (Brontosaurus?) roaming over to the techno dome and practically getting his head inside, flame controllers operable from behind the dj booth (you can see the torches on the sides the dome) and the 1500 fun people who we shared space with us there.  

One of my favorite events I've played at, I think you will like this bumping TECHNO adventure :)  Thanks much to Devin for bringing me, I know you love techno so this set was for you!  And thanks to everyone else who helped put this together, I know it's a huge amount of people working together to make something special like this happen!  Mission accomplished!

Biography:

In his zone from deep house to techno, Ben Annand pairs impeccably smooth mixing skills with a dynamic style that keeps the music moving, artfully playing with breakdowns and spending most of his time in the mix.

“For me, a great mix is the interplay of 2 unique pieces of music, creating something greater than the sum of the parts - and a great set weaves those mixes into a musical flow you can’t help but lose yourself in on the dance floor.”

Ben fell in love with dancing and rave culture in 1995, and learned to mix in 1996. Just 2 years later he became resident dj at the famed Moontribe Gathering, and started his own production company, Tropical. The first half of his career was mostly focused on DJing abroad, with 13 trips to Moscow’s Propaganda club, travel across Russia, Spain, and Mexico, an appearance at Wiggle at Fabric in London and two at the Labyrinth Festival in Japan.  

In more recent years, Ben Annand became a top West Coast festival DJ, and recently played a standout set at his 5th consecutive Lightning in a Bottle (CA). He has also appeared at Sunset Campout and Desert Hearts (CA), Oregon Eclipse (OR), Photosynthesis and Cascadia (WA), Shambhala and Motion Notion (BC, Canada).

As organizer of Tropical, he's donated over $32,000 to charity, hosted zero-waste events in Hawaii, and presented gender-balanced dj lineups.

Whatever his project,, Ben Annand is always contributing, and always thinking outside the box.
