Hey guys! If you thought funk ended with the 70s you're wrong. The Horndogz are still holding it down here in 2013 with that raw funk sound! I've been following them for a while after hearing one of their tracks on Wefunk Radio and I ended up asking them for the parts to this song so I could do a remix. They loved what I did with https://soundcloud.com/slynk/slynk-fried-chicken-remix and agreed! The track actually features the one and only FRED WESLEY! A funk legend and one of my biggest inspirations. Wow.

"Dub Mixes Volume 1" is our latest adventure into the dub room, taking the Jamaican Lovers-Rock classics of our first EP, Volume 1, and giving these studio versions a dub treatment.  We reached out to our extended family for the production, as well as doing our own dub versions.  The mixes for the EP include the talents of DJ Prophecy, Blakesbeats and our very own core production team (Itai Shapira, Todd M. Simon and Adam Berg).   We had so much fun twisting knobs and tweaking the filters on these mixes, and we're very excited to share with you our latest venture into the Jamaican tradition of "dubbing" these classics...enjoy!

That's The Way Of The World (DJ Prophecy Mix)

It was 50 years ago that a talented local musician named Lamont Butler started to create an album that would combine love, happiness and joy. Lamont’s only official album release It’s Time For A Change has been very popular for record collectors around the world but never saw the wider success it truly deserved.

Born 1949 in Louisville, Kentucky; Lamont Butler was drawn to music and dance from the very beginning. He was the son of a well-known gospel, blues and R&B singer and pianist Clifford Butler Sr, receiving an early education in what’s required to be a touring musician. It quickly became apparent that Lamont had a wonderful voice and was pushed to the front despite no being fully confident yet of his singing ability. Lamont performed on the gospel circuit for a number of years cutting his teeth with groups such as The Enterprise, The Dynamics and The New Beginnings eventually going solo with Lamont Butler and The Spirit of Truth.  

It was whilst he was singing and performing during this period that he started to write his own songs and think about putting together an album bringing together all of his influences from R&B, jazz, soul and of course gospel. The result is very raw, almost low-fi sound of It’s Time For A Change, released nearly 10 years after Lamont started to pen the first tracks and it gained relative success. He toured the album around churches in Louisville with tracks such as Love One Another, Time For A Change and Ungodly War quickly becoming firm favourites within the churches of Louisville.

Miles Away Records are pleased to working with Lamont and to be issuing a long overdue album reissue of It’s Time For A Change on LP and CD. Remastered with care by Nick Robbins at Sound Mastering and complete with in-depth sleeve.

Hailing from Atlanta, GA, Darryl Reeves is a saxophonist that effortlessly merges the lines between funk, soul & hip-hop, expressed from a platform rooted in jazz. Growing up in a musical family, Reeves attended the Northwestern Performing & Visual Arts Center in Miami. Moved by hip-hop samples originating from jazz, Reeves was led to being influenced by greats such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Reeves studied music at Jackson State University. He subsequently completed his Masters of Music at the University of New Orleans, where he studied with Terence Blanchard and performed on the scene with Delfeayo Marsalis. In 2004, Reeves released the funky and playful Diary of a Bandstand, to ample acclaim. It featured Robert Glasper, Russell Gunn & Quamon Fowler and cemented Reeves' reputation for presenting a new outlook on the sound, style and production of jazz music. Reeves has kept a steady hand in not being limited to any specific genre. Some know him just as well for his production in hip-hop. Reeves caught Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson's attention with his ingenious jazz-funk remixes of Jay-Z's Black Album, which was spun upon many of the drummer's dj sets. Recently in Atlanta, he has been the music director of many highly acclaimed live sets with Aishah Rashied Hyman's Spreadlove and DJ Kemit. He has performed and recorded with notable artists including Roy Ayers, The O'Jays, Frank McComb, Angie Stone, Kirk Whalum, Jill Scott, Phonte, Toku, Janelle Monae, Young Jeezy, B.O.B. and T-Pain.
