of the night that the moon fell in the lake

you and I were sitting out on the dock
when it fell from the sky without a sound
and who would've thought that after all this time
it would come unstuck and tumble down

into the water, but we put it right

we made a net to fish the moon out
from the bottom of the lake that it lit up
and it was glowing green just like a luna moth
and it turns out it's smaller than we thought

we cleaned the mud out of its craters
and we polished it until it shone
then we gathered up the summer's last fireflies
and they all held it tight and flew it home
