Uplifting, summery new tune from Bournemouth based singer songwriter Ben Holt.  Been experimenting a bit with strings and horn sections and this track is also my first proper mix!  Hope you like it!

The Gift

Simple, mellow keys with a haunting lead vocal.  Layered Beach Boys-esque harmonies coming in on the second verse build to a warm rich explosion of sound in the chorus.  Cello, oboe and wide harmonies surround a poignant 'what would you do for love' lyrical message.  The song takes a surprising twist at the end to close on a gentle, non-obvious note.

The sound of running away….getting lost…….feeling alone……trying to be your own person………but steadily failing………..then needing help……….crying out for someone to take you home……..then the parents turn up………..and the feelings of embarrassment and guilt rush up through your body and into your mind…..then its all over…….time to go home.

This is a track I wrote as part of my Fire EP back in 2008.  Remixed and remastered, the result is a faster paced, indie rock track with crashing guitars catchy hooks and melodic synths.

Fooling Around

An electrifying synth and guitar fest underpinned by a Killers-esque drum and bassline.  The song only stops for breath in a middle eight fog of swirling synth and backwards radio style vocal before pounding once more into a guitar crazy crescendo.  Picture red skies, burning mountains, apocalyptic landscape and animals about to learn their fate.  This song encompasses that vision in a panic-stricken 5 minutes.

A dark subject matter in the song does not reflect the uplifting melody with chiming guitars and a downward acoustic guitar rhythm pattern.  Beatlesque in style, warm synths and soft vocals add a hint of summer to an otherwise dark tune!

Texture

Ben Holt is an accomplished singer-songwriter whose music and lyrics are honest, warm and melodic.  Based on the sunny south coast of England.  His sound echoes influences of early A-HA, The Beatles, Pet Sounds era Beach Boys and piano based artists such as One Republic, Tom Odell and Keane.  Ben began his musical career playing drums in a Bristol band named 'Benny Profane' until a period of travelling the world took him away from the scene for some time.  It was at this point that Ben began penning his own songs, albeit without any kind of musical instrument at the time!  Just a wayward imagination and pen and paper.  Not content with sitting behind a drum kit, Ben learnt piano, found a voice and began embarking on a creative journey, playing covers and writing his own songs.  Like all artists, the songs have taken a while to blossom, but now Ben has discovered a sound which is predominantly driven by the piano but coloured with orchestral layers and vocal harmonies.  Over ten years on, Ben Holt is an accomplished and experienced singer-songwriter, writing about personal experiences past and present, delivered with emotion and warmth.  The songs are written, recorded and mixed in Ben's home studio and are currently being worked into a live set environment with piano, voice and the odd backing track.
