Born in 1988, Ben Socrates is a versatile musician with a career encompassing as a concert pianist and experience in the field of contemporary improvisation, jazz and electronics. Ben is the recipient of numerous prizes including the Clifford Benson and Robert Headley prizes for solo performance, the Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Duo Prize and the Founders Prize for accompaniment.

Alongside his solo career, Ben’s interest in collaboration has led to his involvement in a number of innovative projects. These have included work with both emerging and established composers, theatre and contemporary dance companies, installation artists and musicians from an array of disciplines.

Ben completed his postgraduate studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in 2011, with a scholarship from the TCM Trust, alongside support from the Osbourne Charitable Trust, The Kathleen Trust, The South Square Trust, The Funtington Music Group and the Geoffrey Parsons Memorial Trust. Ben studied under renowned pianist and composer, Douglas Finch. He has performed in masterclasses to acclaimed teachers including Aaron Shorr, Deidre Doyle, Jonathan Plowright, Deniz Gelenbe, Christine Croshaw, Martino Tirimo and Eugene Asti.

Ben has always pursued a keen interest in classical song, performing in many recitals of German Lieder, French Art Song and Russian Romances. He is also a keen supporter of contemporary music, and was recently invited to give a masterclass on modern piano repertoire at Sevenoaks School in Kent. He collaborated with composer Soosan Lolavar on a new work for improvised piano and electronics, entitled ‘Black Dog’, which went on to win the John Halford Prize for Piano Composition at its premiere last year.

Ben’s interest in collaboration extends to interdisciplinary art. In 2012, he launched Field Song; an interactive ‘sonic sculpture’ which was created with a team of installation and technological artists. Field Song, which features a generative score composed by Ben himself, won the Ideas Tap Innovators Award and was exhibited at the More Than Words Festival 2012 in conjunction with BBC Radio 4.

In July 2012, Ben featured on a tour of France with pianist Matthieu Esnult which was widely covered in the national press. Together they staged an acclaimed new interpretation of Ravel’s La Valse, arranged for two pianos with a unique new choreography that merged musicians and dancers.

Ben has performed at venues including the Southbank Centre, Old Royal Naval College Chapel and Chichester Cathedral, and at venues throughout the UK and France. He has also organised and performed recitals in support of charities, such as a piano concert  in that raised money for the victims of the Japan tsunami in 2011.
