L'Amour A La Plage (Mixtape)

The summer was gorgeous this year; we were blessed with a decent amount of sun, which made everything glow with saturated colours and vibrating air. Nature, landscapes and people could reveal their beauty.

I was lucky this summer to celebrate a genuine union of people, music and nature in La Clusaz at Le Champ des Platines of Radio Meuh. The majestic mountains welcomed and embraced us, allowing to enjoy the beautiful day at l’alpage de l’Étale - the pasture covered with a soft carpet of a fresh grass. The lovely people who climbed to dance with us brought so much love. We danced till everything melted in the golden light of sunset.

The recording of my 3-hour-long set brought all the sensations back, and I am again at l’alpage de l’Étale. Thank you for the love and care you gave to us.

The grass in the pasture will grow healthier this year. The cows will be happier, and Reblochon will get even tastier. A bientôt les amis!

Le Champ Des Platines 2023 DJ set

To celebrate Late Night Tales providing the pre-movie warm up music selection on Saturday 9th August at Film4's outdoor Summer Screen event at the historic Somerset House, we give you a very special soundtrack mix to enjoy.

The soundtrack composer is the modern era’s equivalent to the great classical writers of the 18th and 19th centuries. These days, our Chopins and Mozarts are musicians like John Williams, Thomas Newman or Ennio Morricone and their arena is not the opera house but the movie theatre. The advent of the talking picture in 1927 revolutionised entertainment and condemned the stars of the silent era to swift unemployment. It’s no coincidence that the first great movie of the talkie age was Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, in which music was its central focus. 

A good soundtrack can lend even the most mediocre movie a celestial quality, elevate it beyond the streets, houses, people and dialogue; it gives it that ethereal quality that separates the moving picture from real life. Even the most gritty subject matter is a form of escapism and that, after all, is why the movie is one of the 20th century’s greatest cultural gifts. - Bill Brewster

I stumbled across a recording of a weather report from the Burns’ Day storm of 1990 during which more than ninety people lost their lives. It inspired me to make this latest Deep Folk Mixtape. I chose songs and field recordings that all deal with winter and the Christmas season - a period of reflection and loss but also coming together and regeneration.

This is a mix I did for the good people at Afield back in November. I was asked to put together a mix inspired by travel and this was the inspiration.. 
"Living in a city you rarely see the sky without a line of rooftops, buildings or cranes obscuring the whole picture. Like many things it’s easy to take this for granted and it’s only when faced with a different outlook that it becomes apparent. This has been the case on several occasions this year to the extent that the phrase ‘a big sky place’ has become commonly used round my way. I’ve been to Scotland, The Lake District and Ibiza over the passed few months - all parts of the world that carry the tag perfectly. So this mix contains some of the music that sound tracked or has been inspired by inordinate hours gazing up into a big sky."
