Bloodlines

I've been experimenting with using altered techniques on a forced Tenor banjo.  I say 'forced' because I bought a cheap Kay open backed 5 string banjo at the flea market years ago and removed the 5th string so that I could bow both the highest strings and the lowest strings with impunity.    I've tried tuning the drum on the banjo to the fundamental frequency of an open tuning on the instrument:  In this case, I tuned to CGAD.
This allows me, though I only used the bowing technique on this piece, to use hammer dulcimer mallets,  1/4 scale Suzuki violin bows to play the instrument and then I can also sing into the banjo to create string resonances from the head and notes sung vibrating the open chord.
I can also use Middleeastern and Indian finger and hand drumming techniques to play the drum of the banjo........either with the strings muted (dry) or unmuted (resonant chord ensuing).
I'm no accomplished banjo player but cool things can result!
