For the third Teklife flexi disc, Jalen brings us Rhythm and Bass, an intergalactic slice of off-kilter footwork. Comprised of a minimal drum kit, menacing bass and several abstract sounds, each element ricochets off each other like feet do the floor. Through calculated use of flangers and reverse reverb, grainy synths are stretched and swirl around your head like a transmission caught from the far depths of space. While rather isolated and eerie, its intense dynamics make it an extremely functional battle track, perfectly crafted for the fury within the circle. This cosmic single-sided disc gives us a fascinating glimpse at the under-documented Chicagoan, and showcases Jalen’s unique ability to tailor rhythms on the micro level, perfectly fit for the detailed patterns of the dancers his music is made for.
