After hearing Alex play out at @ornate-music’s Quadra EP Release Party alongside @milesatmospheric and James Thomson In February 2020 just before the lockdown we were hooked. Based in Brighton, Alex fell in love with techno from seeing the likes of Derrick May and Dave Clarke at the Zap Club in the early nineties, and his regular pilgrimages to London’s Lost parties were an inspiration, where Jeff Mills became a massive influence on his musical perspective.

Alex Downey has been an ardent supporter of quality underground music and a prominent purveyor of all things electronic as a DJ, vinyl pusher, and radio presenter for well over two decades.

Alex has been a resident at the celebrated Freerotation Festival from it’s inception. He’s DJed at such diverse events as Wiggle, Split, Fabric, Labyrinth Festival in Japan, The Big-Beat Boutique, The Essential Festival and continues to play the best parties.
Hhis broad taste and consummate selection skills can be heard on his ‘Voyage De Lux’ radio shows, on Brighton’s 1BTN FM every month on the 4th Wednesday night.

To celebrate 20 years of building Labyrinths, we have decided to release one set from each of the last ten years. I've chosen ten timeless moments that both document the history of the event and provide a historical snapshot of underground electronic music over the past ten years.

We have chosen a broad range--from closing techno sets, to morning ambient sets, to experimental sets to close the night. Each set represents a different side of the event. Taken together, they present a portrait of a decade of music.

Now in its 200th instalment, this Podcast has given voice to a diverse offering of global talents across the musical spectrum, from the democratic rhythms of zeitgeist appropriate techno and house through to more avant-garde synthwork.

This next guest has cast a large shadow over the technosphere, so large in fact, that no introduction could fully encompass the breadth of his achievements. But in brief: Ben Klock is a titan whose formative years were spent playing marathon mixes to the crowds at Berlin’s (then recently opened) Berghain. Off the back of his endurance sets and the club’s success he became a household name whose influence grew to be felt across the world, with a body of work that includes appearances at an exhaustive list of clubs and festivals, a number of hot releases on Ostgut Ton and an equally respected self-run label (Klockworks) to boot. On this second imprint, his own productions have repeatedly seen the light of day, alongside those from the likes of DVS1, Sterac, Stef Mendesidis and younger talents like Temudo and Vil & Cravo. The sound, ubiquitous as it is, will be familiar to anyone involved in the world of electronic music and there’s good reason for that: Klock’s deep and percussive work and ability to pull from a wide range of influences have earmarked him as a unique agent for the techno cause. Atmospheric and delivered with hammering force, Klock’s refined palette for rhythms is as relevant now as ever. EPM.189 comes from Fossil Archive boss, R.M.K. Hailing from London, R.M.K is an exciting new project by Fossil Archive label head Roberto. It represents a faster and more intense take on his unique brand of Techno. He utilises his knowledge and past experiences, which include regularly playing at Berghain and Tresor in Berlin, as well as fabric in London, to develop his individual sound. R.M.K has distilled that experience into this 2-hr set, recorded directly from his residency at The Glove That Fits, London for the EPM series. Featuring Axel Karakasis, NØRBAK, Glaskin, Juri Heidemann, Volster, James Ruskin, Stephen Brown, Franco Rossi plus a brace of unreleased tracks from Vinicius Honorio & R.M.K himself we get a flawless mix of tough yet hypnotic swinging grooves.

During his 20+ year career in music, Roberto has formed friendships and worked in partnership with other respected artists such as Trevino (Marcus In-talex), Jamie Anderson, Robert Owens, Goldie and Nastia. Although the focus is always on the very heart of the most raucous of raves, R.M.K never shies away from groove and funk. This is conveyed in a Live Show that utilises classic hardware from the golden age of UK Rave and now here on this new mix for the EPM series.

I don't normally upload other DJs sets on my SC but I'm making an exception with this one. It's done by the incredible Murf live at Superfreq a few weeks ago. If you don't know Murf you should. He's easily my favourite DJ in the world & was resident with me at the legendary Subterrain at The End from 1995-2002. Murf is the Techno Yoda. There's nothing he doesn't know about House & techno music & is a human encyclopedia on cutting edge dance music. Murf has been very ill of late & is in hospital having various types of major surgery. He'd been in hospital for over a week when we had Superfreq & got special permission to leave hospital for 24 hour to come to play for us. The word trooper is a least we can call him. In pain, drugged up to his eyeballs on meds & pain killers, Murf arrived half way through my set to rapturous cheers & applause from the London faithful who all know what hell he's been going through. This set turned FOLD club in London upside down & is a true example of what an amazing DJ & human being this man is. I doff my cap Sir & it's an honour to be able to put this set up on my page & also to call you my friend. I love you brother. <3
