Australian magpies are unrelated to magpies of other continents.  Their vocalisations include extraordinarily complex and varied calls during the day, simple shrieks of alarm and attack, a plaintive begging call of juveniles which look bigger than their parents and beak-clapping.  Some of them sing before or at dawn, and this can be delicate, melodic and highly individual.  There are a lot of magpies in this area, and my impression is that only a fraction of them call at dawn.

My wife Tina and I used to enjoy listening to a magpie singing before dawn when we lived in Rosanna.  At times he or she seemed to be singing most mornings - and it was clearly the same one over months or years, since the song was distinctive.

In Daylesford we have occasionally heard one calling at dawn nearby.  Here are two recordings of this bird made with a Sony PCM D50 and its internal microphones.  

This first recording was in night-time darkness, with dawn an hour or more away.  The air was still and foggy.  I was not with the recorder at the time.  We can hear the magpie flying close, and he or she begins calling after about a minute.

The second recording https://soundcloud.com/robin-whittle/australian-magpie-singing-at-dawn-6am-16th-september-2016 is clearly the same bird (we have not seen it since it was dark on one occasion and he or she was obscured by leaves on the second).  The morning was still and dawn was in progress, with more noise from distant cars and from running water thanks to recent downpours.

Bass Drum: new controls based on Colin Fraser's mods .

HiHat: a new pot for tuning, as also first developed by Colin Fraser.

Snare: A gutsier (more lower mid-range) Snappy signal with a decay closer than usual to exponential, with a range of envelope times (Tone pot) which extends to both shorter and longer than usual.

The lower range of the Tune pot is extended so that it includes zero frequency (no tone) for most of the note, with a short pulse of low frequency at the start. 

There is also an external signal input for the Snappy part of the sound, which replaces the white noise signal from the TR-909's internal noise circuit.

Hand Clap circuits: A switch to disable the pseudo-reverb component; a pot for Density, a pot for noise Intensity.  Also, an external signal input for both components of the sound, which are normally made from the white noise signal of the internal generator.

Modified TR-909 Real World Interfaces

I recorded this in 1979 at the home of our friends Kim Devenish and Julie Constable, in Yanakie, just north of Wilson's Promontory.

A Korg 700 drives the spring reverb of an RE-201 Space Echo, which drives a home-made L-R output breath-pressure volume control made with recently released GE H11F1 FET opto-isolators (I still don't know how they work).  My Z80 computer produced the 8 bit DAC digital drum sounds.  Two 15 IPS Teac A-3340S reel-to-reel tape recorders with their heads 2.4 metres apart made a recirculating tape echo.  This discrete L-R signal was good for speakers in a reverberant room, but was weird on headphones.  In 2018 I used Ardour to make a network of delays, EQ and a little reverb, with which I made this version which is fine on headphones and speakers.

Just Hanging out

Australian musician Kreap has returned to smash dancefloors into a frenzy after a 10 year lost weekend. Little is known about Kreap. 
We only communicate with him via a message board on a bus terminal wall. 
Its rumoured he has a secret life working for the US military but this has not been confirmed. 
We believe he is happily married to "Mariam Kittenwhiskers", a burlesque dancer with a passion for basket weaving and raising jaguars. 
Kreap has only retained 40 perc of his original body and has vaginal fluid on the brain due to a tragic chemical accident involving experimental toothpaste in the 90's. There have been numerous reports and sightings of Kreap on the internet in the last few months fuelling rumours of a comeback , we obtained this material from a very close member of his distant family.
