Episode 67 invites a producer, DJ, and live performer who is probably my most requested guest…. I’m happy to welcome @JochemPaap, also known as Speedy J.

With a string of successful releases on Warp and Plus 8 throughout the 90s and early 2000s, Speedy J’s name became synonymous with a special kind of driving, peak-time techno that helped define the genre. Although he’s explored ambient, sampling, and the world of audio-visual, his deepest dive has been into live performance and improvisation, both solo and in collaboration with fellow techno stalwarts like Chris Liebing, Surgeon, and Lucy. 

His pandemic-inspired project STOOR is just the latest in a decade of devotion to the craft of live performance, welcoming other artists into the fold for an entirely improvised live show that can last as long as eight hours. In this conversation, Speedy J and I explore the intricacies of improvisation, the thrill of the moment, and how he captures captures that excitement in the studio.

This week we’re blessed to welcome a true legend of the techno game with Rolando taking over RYC waves for a two-hour jaunt into otherworldly floor narratives and lushly-forested sonic landscapes. Now operating out of Edinburgh, the former Underground Resistance member - forever associated with the timeless classic ‘Knights of the Jaguar’ - has laid the foundation to a ceaselessly compelling body of work, including key releases on Ostgut Ton, Delsin and his own imprint, R3. Championing a sound most entrancingly dynamic, largely informed by groove, jazz and Latin percussions, Rolando graces us with a mix that combines the finest of his signature mystic-imbued vision and sixth sense for crafting some of the most memorable club experiences to be had. Tapping in his love for polyamorous Detroit techno and house combinations, mostly leaning into the more soulful side of his hometown’s heritage rather than the industrial edge, Rolando embarks us on a ride across shape-shifting technoid boogie reliefs and further uncharted routes. In a country where DJ talent is in abundance and competition is fierce, the struggle to stand out from the rest is not an easy task. Once referred to as “The DJs, DJ” Ben Cromack has been presenting his highly improvisational hands-on style of DJing to Australian audiences since the mid 90s. 
Hypnotic, futuristic soundscapes, percussive syncopated rhythms, Detroit-esque soul and jacking funk are just some of the flavours Ben weaves together, regularly whipping Melbourne dance floors into a frenzy of sweaty dancing bodies. 
From playing underground warehouse parties in Melbourne’s early rave scene, to working in iconic record stores, to gracing the console at many of the cities most well respected club nights and venues, Ben’s musical knowledge and experience shines through every time he plays.
