"This Call May be Recorded" is the first single to be released from Ben deHoedt's forthcoming album, "City Lights Shimmer".  On his second LP, deHoedt has created a glimmering world of neon lights, reflections and treacherous mirages.  A departure from his last album, his new music is built upon rhythm, warm synthesisers and voices in the dark.  Inspired by classic undercover police dramas from "Miami Vice" to "Deep Cover", these songs are cinematic in their atmosphere and scope.  Ben deHoedt is an independent musician, songwriter and documentary film maker from Melbourne, Australia.

CITY LIGHTS SHIMMER

In writing and recording “City Lights Shimmer”, Ben deHoedt has created the soundtrack to an imagined film, heavy on atmosphere and texture:  Songs which serve as set-pieces, vocals as incantations.

deHoedt loves cinema and the album format.  He has set out to create an album which is structured like two sides of an LP, and feels “of a piece”. It opens with “This Call May be Recorded, which Doubtful sounds describes as:

“lush, neon-lit, hyper sleek sound of dark and futuristic electronic avant pop”.  

An almost gothic instrumental, “Dianne’s Leaving”, closes the first half of the record.  Following this is a sequence of songs which lean ever closer into the idea of finality and acceptance.  A summative overture written to close the album eventually gave way to closing song “Your Piece”, its nihilistic themes culminating in a wall of baritone electric guitar doom.  

This was an album which deHoedt allowed to dwell in his mind for over 12 months before applying his final strokes to the canvas.  He wrote and recorded “City Lights Shimmer” in his home studio in Pascoe Vale, Victoria, through 2020-22.

Ben deHoedt is an Australian composer, songwriter and film editor. Originally from Adelaide, he lives in Melbourne where he works by day as a social worker. He has been writing music and experimenting with sound collage since he was a teenager, forming his first band at the age of 16. Ben’s abilities as a song writer and arranger were honed during his formative years as part of the Adelaide music scene as he found his own distinct voice. Ben’s passion for film grew during his years working as a projectionist, continuing to explore instrumental and electronic music production. Ben has lived and worked in Melbourne since 2007, where his body of creative work has grown.
