A couple weeks ago a good friend of Sweater Funk, Seth Kolski, passed away. We invited him to guest DJ with us back in the Li Po basement as well as the Knockout many times, including coming out to play with us on his last birthday. Those of us in the crew that knew him considered him to be a family member. On Sunday July 24th, 2016 we recorded this live tribute mix of some of his favorite songs, songs he put us up on back in the basement, tracks we geeked over when he guested, songs we texted back and forth about, and tracks he always used to play on his long running Sweet Power radio show (KUSP Santa Cruz, 2006-2015), etc.  We hope you enjoy this mix and remember Seth Kolski (August 23rd, 1975 - July 19th, 2016).  Hopefully we'll try to get some more of his legendary mixes posted online. We're gonna miss ya homie.

DieterMitPlatten is probably one of the most eager people on the internet when it comes to rare (and not so rare) Boogie, Disco and Funk & Soul - with over 38.000 releases rated on Discogs. 

For this evening, the guy from Vienna with a 9 - 5 IT job, who spends every available penny on buying new records, invites you do sit down at the table for his birthday meal and let him carry you through different flavors - such as Modern Soul, Gospel, UK Street Soul, New Jack, Jazzfunk and of course the necessary wee bit of Boogie.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I’m Isabell, 29 years old and currently living in Hamburg. I grew up in a tiny village in the South of Germany and I was lucky enough to become friends with the coolest bunch of local indie-loving people. Thanks to them I was hooked on indie and punk music and adored bands like the Cramps and Johnny Thunders throughout my late teens. I’m still a fan of guitar music, so it’s not surprising that you find those records in my shelf next to a pretty decent 45 collection of Rocksteady and Early Reggae. However, if I have to pick one genre which everything revolves around it has to be Soul music with all the beautiful, sexy, deep, fun facets of it. It’s the kind of music that makes my heartbeat go up and my bank account statement go down the most. My collection captures everything between slow and mellow Deep Soul and hip-shaking Boogie, Funk and Disco across the continents and what I love about it the most is that after all these years of collecting, I still have the feeling that I only know a fraction of what is still out there to be discovered.
 
2)45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format?

Even though I fully appreciate LP albums which were thought through properly by the artists, I really like the fact that one song (ok, 2 when considering the flip side) gets the undivided attention when pressed on a 7inch. It kind of makes a song more special and you listen more closely and you have the feeling of “owning” something precious.
Well, and the fact that I’m only 5 foot 4, so the less I have to carry around when going to DJ gigs the better!
 
3)One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

You can probably categorise it as a Soul, Funk, Disco mix. I thought about the concept of it quite a bit, whether I should stick to one tempo and genre or try to blend various styles together. I decided to do the latter, since this gives a better idea about the type of music I’m into.
The mix starts with moody Deep Soul and ends with Boogie and Disco. Between that you find a selection of Modern/Crossover Soul and Funk. I even snuck one of my favourite Reggae songs into it.
 
4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

I throw a monthly party called “Hey, it’s love!” together with my boyfriend in our favourite Hamburg bar Kleinraumdisco. Apart from that you may also find me at Mojo every now and again. If you don’t want to leave the house you can check my SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/bellasandwhistles
