”Just Like Russell Brand” uses an awesome new lingo “EDM Mockney,” a rhyming slang based on the names of DJs.  

The song namechecks the dodgiest cockney accents in film history and is inspired by British mockney icons such as  Mick Jagger, Crass, Jamie Oliver, Guy Ritchie, and of course Russell Brand himself. 

The contemporary and diverse sound of “Just like Russell Brand” is ironically assembled from references to classic British dance artists KLF, The Prodigy, Shamen, and others, combined with nods to Swedish House Mafia, Ricky Gervais, Chaz and Dave, Frank Zappa and Lerner and Lowe.

The title song “Site of the See-Thru” reinforces the underlying trope of the lyrics: the invisible is seen, the unspeakable is uttered. This is achieved indirectly through a list of clues – an item of clothing, a dream, a scent – that leads the listener like a detective through multiple plot twists. Like Akira Kurosawa’s movie Rashomon, each part – in this case each verse – provides a different interpretation of the same situation.

“Your Parents (Dancing with the Stars)” is an electro-pop gem from Benedict Sinister, following up his “16 Lines from Bryan Ferry,” which reached the Number 5 Breakout spot on the Billboard dance club charts. “Your Parents” features sweet ephemeral backing vocals over a laid-back Chainsmokers-style arrangement. Add Sinister’s trademark spoken word delivery and the resulting track has drawn comparisons ranging from John Legend to Frank Sinatra to Weird Al Yankevic. 

LA DJ Christian B (whose “In Another Life” with Ray Rhodes ft Meiko is currently charting) has produced a techno house mix of the track, achieving an eighties eurodisco feel with hints of Kraftwerk, Yello and  Black Box.

“Your Parents (Dancing with the Stars)” is a love song with a heavy dose of social commentary and humor. Sinister ridicules his girlfriends’ parents – their conversation, political opinions, home cooking, holiday photos, Christmas gifts, board games, pets, etc. – but as a good boyfriend he says he is willing to tolerate all of these, and even to capitulate to watching “Dancing with the Stars” with them. 

But soon enough, the parental phrase “Chloe’s told us so much about you” takes on an ominous resonance and the video shows Benedict himself experiencing the discomfort of being judged for his age difference with Chloe, their sexual activities, and his arrest record.

The “Your Parents” video clip, created by Sinister himself, using Vyond corporate animation software, could be described as Meet the Parents: Into the Spider-verse, or The Simpsons go to Manhattan. It combines well observed vignettes from family life with skewering social stereotypes and celebrities (Al Gore, Charlie Rose, Lana del Rey), and it piles on inside jokes from pop culture, politics, psychoanalysis, and film history. The clip rewards several viewings and even some Googling to absorb the gags and references.

Benedict Sinister cites French singer-songwriter Vincent Delerm’s Parisian Bourgeois-Bohemian anthem, “Tes Parents” as inspiring him to write his own New York based original song, which he recorded in London, co-producing with Brighton-based Ian Preston.
