I did two mixes for BB Critch for this song. The first is the big bright Radio Mix that shows all the parts big n brash and this version with a warmer sound favoring the acoustic guitar lines over the electrics.

Scott Free wrote and sung this himself. It is a new direction for him with a less Punk sound. The song is really powerful with a nicely developed lyric and a delivery that shows the "broken down" feel very well.

Scott brings a level of power to this protest song that makes it compelling. I deliberately mixed this to be confronting in the same way protest songs used to be done. There is no sense in hiding what he is singing about. It is an ugly subject so hiding under pretties seems like a denial of the story being told.

Naked Head is a show band that creates humorous originals based on combining genre tropes with modern feels. This was a job to mix, even though there were about 80 separate tracks for all the vocals to make the choir. I mixed it to sound both 1979 London & 2001 So Cal at the same time.

This is #2 in an album I am mixing for Naked Head, a local act with a musical theatre bent. These are high-track-count mixes with all the backing vocals and little details. It is all so worth it though in the end. Jake is a super Arranger.

This was a purpose written demo for the forthcoming Tectonic RE synth from Skrock which I have done Sound Design for.

The musical concept came from watching Rogue One and finding a sound that was similar to the garbled voices of the Death Troopers (black Storm Troopers) in Rogue One. the idea of writing what a visit from them may sound like appealed. Needless to say, it had to be tense (hence the minor seconds) and brutal (the drums), with a sudden end.

My mix of the Stems provided by Lewitt Microphones for their #MakeYourselfHeard contest.

I came into this not really knowing the band and definitely not the song. I refused to listen to the song or even the band's style overall so that I could see how my take on the material compared to not only the official version but to what others have done.

What I did know was that these were pretty raw studio sessions with an emphasis on live & in the moment. The band's passion was on-tape. Just my thing.

I set out to deliver a mix of '60s Garage - '70s Stadium. A "band in a big hall" sort of vibe as that is what the material said to me. It is that mix of bombastic + grit.

There was a lot of spill on all the tracks. I did the least I felt necessary to tidy that up. No automatic gating. I only roughly chopped out the parts around the vocals and before the Bass first plays, using fairly long fades. If you lean in, you may hear it but this was not uncommon on old records. I only cut when I felt that the spill was "muddying the waters" more than adding vibe. I left the room mics pretty high in the mix.

On the masters, I used gentle stereo widening but also used a process to create a semi-mono mix. This was to bring some of the vinyl feel whilst still allowing for the modern taste of a broad spread.

I have had people say that seeing I mostly mix electronic music, I could never handle something Rock & Raw. I hope this helps them to see that it is all about Story and that genre is for children playing games.

Jake of J-Hit Records came to me with a song he had developed with Jackson Brash. It is a charming summer "fun in the sun" song. He wanted a mix that felt more like something from the 60s than the typical LOUD thing. I was delighted as it is such a charming song. We sat together through the whole process (seeing Jake and I live close) and discussed everything I was doing, Why this thing, and not what they say in those Tuts??? Jake was surprised at how different the process was.

This was great track to prepare like it was a Stevie Wonder track in 1964 as it is a well-written and arranged track with solid performances. Much of the material was MIDI but with my approach, it feels like a lively track, full of character.

A very sweet summer seaside Country song with shades of Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, and The Beach Boys "Kokomo". When the raw material is a good as this, it is a joy to mix.

BB Critch feat Mella - Port Aransus - Benedict Roff-Marsh Radio Mix

Slava's original mix of this song was very loud. I wanted to bring out the beauty and mix it more like a Classic Metal song. It may not be as loud but I have let out dynamics, detail, and beauty that loud cannot do.

Angel 7 - Genghis Khan - Benedict Roff - Marsh Mix

This was one of a pair of songs I mixed for Beholder. "Brightstar" being the other. They are both really fun Indie Rock Band stuff. I delivered two mixes of this one the "SoCal" & "Classic". I must say personally I preferred the Classic Mix as less stereo-ness makes a more tough 'genuine' sound. I understand tho people are swayed but the sound in headphones so here is the usual guitars panned out mix.

Beholder - Planets Align - Benedict Roff-Marsh SoCal Mix

I will admit that I do not like this song and sadly the artist was a real challenge to work with personally. I could see his commercial potential and mixed this for him before he was signed. This was the second mix I did but whatever I did, he was not willing to be happy. The material was so limited and poorly recorded, I really had nowhere to go. I was trying to get him to see that this was him and ready to go for who he was right there. Interestingly the tracks I now see on YouTube sound just like this so I was right, he just wasn't ready to believe.

I am a Mix Engineer. My approach is different from the typical online mixer these days. My approach is to use the mix to help tell the Story of your Song. I am not looking to make the loudest or widest mix, but to make your song very emotionally engaging. If you find yourself tired of all those loud but flat mixes, give me a try.

I write Space Music which I consider a form of Proto-Techno or Techno as it was initially formed by artists like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Tomita etc. A few oddities get put here. Most of my work is on my site and bandcamp.
