possible interpretation:
» The acousmatic composition “songs of the deep” is inspired by the sea as a soundscape that is simultaneously otherworldly and familiar sounding. The primary focus of this work lies on the calls and songs of (humpback-)whales. According to recent findings, these little understood, complex sounds are much more than mere signals for hunting or mating. They lay the basis for a cultural system that spreads and evolves over time and space, from whale to whale and from population to population. Songs can be heard for many kilometres, carrying the identity of its emitter in the unique pitch structure of its calls.
Our ears, tuned to sound traveling through the air, are however shielded from these communications by the almost impermeable threshold, which is the sea’s surface. 
Above it, this world is entirely hidden to our ears. We can pierce it, listen to it through electronic means or briefly visit this alien place. Never will we however gain a ‘native’s’ view of these songs. 
The composition thus does not use hydrophonic field recordings of whales as its material. The ‘songs of the deep’ are rather synthetically reimagined. Sounds of our familiar world also play a role. They can be heard through the imagined perception of a creature of the deep - as a short glimpse when it breaches through to the surface. «
