This mixtape came together over a long weekend, definitely not my usual style, but the tracks felt too good to leave buried on a hard drive. There’s something special about creating just for the sake of it, with no pressure to fit into any broader narrative. I hope you, the listener, find your own connection with this release.

The vibe I was aiming for? That nostalgic warmth you get from playing an old cassette or stumbling across a dusty 64kbps Limewire-era house mix. Raw and imperfect, yet strangely comforting.

As a little bonus, I've included an Ambient Jungle/DNB track at the end that kinda sums up how I was feeling throughout the whole creative process.

Production Notes:
All tracks were sequenced and mixed in Ableton Live.
The Roland JV-1010 unit plays a big role throughout, mainly for pads and atmospheric layers, but sometimes leads too (e.g. the Clav-style keys on Winter in Tokyo).

Software synths and samplers used:
Korg's M1, Triton and Wavestation VSTs, MB's HERA-ONE and Orbhits, Amigo Sampler, and the RX950 for that gritty overdrive and sample rate reduction.

Sample libraries included:
X-Static Goldmine, Original Unknown DJs breakbeats, Zero-G, Zenhiser, E-Lab Files of House, Best Service Pro Samples - House, Vengeance, and Jungle Jungle by Blu Mar Ten, among a few others I'm probably forgetting about.

Ben Hemsley - Caress Me (Original Mix)

The groove-laden three-track release represents a clear departure from the darker techno
sound of TRICK’s maiden release ‘Watch What Ya Doing’ - further demonstrating Topping’s
versatility as a producer. Kicking off proceedings, the EP’s title track is underpinned by an
infectious vocal sample and the funkiest of beats. While over on the B-side, ‘Let Wa Gan’ is a
darker, moodier number and ‘Galaxy’, featuring the scintillating vocals of Liset Alea, is a
celestial melodic stomper. The collaboration with Liset came about after Topping heard her
vocals on Alex Kid’s ‘Don’t Hide It’. The track quickly became a staple in his sets and he
made the decision to reach out to the Cuban-born singer shortly after.

Marshall Jefferson x Solardo - Move Your Body

A pumping club weapon, the  title track opens proceedings, pairing Patois MC samples with raw, Chicago-influenced house. On the flip side, ‘Easy For Us’ maintains the intensity of ‘Rocket Fuel’, placing an infectious, seemingly never ending four-to-the-floor beat and catchy robotic vocals at its heart. It marks Topping’s first release since his vocal edit of ‘The 302’ by DJ Deeon and Gettoblaster, which was released as part of TRICK 006.
