LTJ Bukem – Kiss 100 FM [25th September 1996]

Stones Throw Records was founded in 1996 by DJ/Producer Chris Manak aka Peanut Butter Wolf as a means of releasing his now-classic debut album with MC Charizma who tragically was shot dead in a mugging in 1993.

Stones Throw is one of the few labels which I am constantly buying since I started to collect vinyl. As a result I got many special moments connected to nearly every Stones Throw record I own. The first record (My vinyl weighs a ton LP) was introduced to me by the true 182nd underground legend DJ Whoever (Whutupdoe!) about 15 years ago, the latest (Madlib Soundtrack for Our vinyl weighs a ton) is just two weeks in my bag; cool co-incidence with the titles by the way.

The idea for this personal Stones Throw best of mix series grew after watching the great documentary "Our vinyl weighs a ton" at Betalounge Hamburg in a room full of Stones Throw afficionados some months ago (the idea apparently grew slowly). The documentary is a must watch if you share even the smallest interest for the label! 

The first part brings the Rap side of the label into focus with Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib, Dilla, Declaime and side projects like Lootpack, Quasimoto, Jaylib or Madvillian.

A second part will come up with a closer view to those records which mainly came out after Dillas death in 2006. With that tragic event Stones Throw fell into a kind of identity crisis with e.g. Madlib refusing to do any more Rap records (glad he changed his opinion - the latest collaboration with Freddie Gibbs is on heavy rotation since months). The label took a kind of musical turnaround in their artist rooster with artists like Dam Funk, James Pants, Boardwalk, Gary Davis and several other underground artists adding several musical dimensions which made the label even more interesting for me.

I have always enjoyed listening to Atmospheric Jungle, but I have only been collecting more and playing Atmospheric sets and mixes in recent years.  Photek is one of my favourite producers of all time, I love his Atmospheric tunes, so when I had the idea for this mix, I had to do it. As usual, Sunday night came and I didn't really have that spark of inspiration on what to play... So, I went quids in with a loose idea that I have had for a while, of paying homage to Jay D'Cruze with a little impromptu Serato mini-mix. Back in the early 1990s, Jay lived in Welling, Kent, which is a town adjacent to where I grew up in Bexleyheath. Our paths crossed a few times through the local record shop, Vinyl Conflict, and I visited him in his studio once with my mate Paul T.

Jay created a lot of great music under his own name and was also part of Boogie Times Tribe alongside Dan Donnelly, who produced the legendary track "Dark Stranger" (which I didn't get round to including in the mix!). Fast forward some 25+ years, and I ran into Jay again at my pal Paul's night in Peckham Audio. Special shout to B.Heath legend Ben Rigby for getting Jay out that night. We hung out, smashed a lot of rum, shared some laughs, and I grilled him a bit about music and raving. He’s a genuinely nice guy and is very modest about his impact on the scene. Hats off to you mate :)

DJ MAFS - D'Cruze minimix - After Dark Radio 45 - Sunday 8th June

For this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio Show, we present almost two hours minutes of Trojan Records music, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic reggae label. Curated by Canadian DJ, producer and record collector Scott Monteith, aka Deadbeat, the show sees him dig deep into his personal collection and the archives of Trojan Records to conduct a mix that mirrors the many ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub hues of the British label.
 
Founded in 1968, Trojan introduced reggae to a global audience while scoring UK chart hits with artists such as The Upsetters, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff and The Maytals. Additionally, the label licensed Jamaican music by legendary producers such as Duke Reid and Leslie Kong, helping take their sounds global.
 
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Carhartt WIP has also joined forces with Trojan Records to create a capsule collection featuring feverish graphics by the Chicago based design collective Boot Boyz, who were given access to the vast Trojan graphic archive.
