slow rise is a poem inspired by two rivers - the Loing which is a tributary to the Seine in France, and the Wandle which is a tributary to the Thames in the UK. Field reco[r]dings were made in Souppes sur Loing, France, and the voice was recorded in Croydon, UK.

This poem uses the cut up technique favoured by the Dada movement, William Burroughs etc  and highlights the UK practice of factory farming lambs ready for Easter meat.

This is an eco poem using my body as edgelands between Farthing Downs in Surrey and Souppes-sur-Loing in France.

this body is edgeland                  an hinterland of compost        hitherto unclaimed 
    flora sneaks   connects to flesh  spores spawn in orbits    
French hawthorn grows red from English eyes
wild boar carve scuffs between sycamore ribs             as fauna grafts to skin  
the web between fingers replaced by spiders floating on thread in the wind   

a single grape on vine                 uvula drips drops from the Loing  
inner cheek half-light ripples       thin pool in palate  flows over meniscus      
cascades through pharynx    soaks dry valley floor of Farthing Downs’ liver and spleen       
seeps through chalk skirting       feeds underground Wandle  below buttercup meadow  
kidney stone tumble to bladder and piss in the Styx       
river tongues talk of red admiral’s flutter across channel of open pores

cormorants perch    black silhouettes without shadow   un-casting their presence
silence pulled in with sub surface reels        French fish lie with  ragwort in Surrey fields
     rabbit ears pout as parakeets cross into the sphere          settle in body’s cavity  
the weight of red noise in echo through bone  drops with leaves to golden depths
 revealed by roots weaving in breathing body soil    
nutrient rich                   mycelial network of tree-speak connected talking in aeons  

cellulose fusion with flesh    gradual osmosis  a Venn diagram of heartbeats  
      a compass spindle rests on glans         dogrose opens from anus    wolves repopulate forests 
alpha predator connects awareness              all species know how it works 
most species know how it works                      but one is nails through bird feet
