Tracks of the Month - April 2018

In E.F.G., Oleg Szyszkin has created a production alter-ego that displays a strong sense of individuality in a crowded underground music scene. As he returns to Particles with a debut original EP, "Clockwork" finds the E.F.G. music machine in full working order.

Hailing from the historic city of Gydnia on the Baltic coast, Oleg Szyszkin is an artist who has continued to make his own history through his E.F.G. moniker for over a decade. Inspired by icons of the late 1990s such as The Prodigy and Fatboy Slim, a foray into trance music in the mid-2000s - mixed with the "deep basslines and techno blips" that he experienced at the famous Club Sfinks in Sopot - saw E.F.G. combine "two worlds" to create his own unique sonic identity.

A November 2011 debut for Passion Fruit Recordings thus saw an incipient production career quickly rise with a gamut of material for leading underground imprints. Almost a double-century of production credits later and the E.F.G. narrative continues to tell a story of a Polish artist resident at progressive house's top table. A regular on Electronic Tree, run by fellow countryman Tuxedo, a host of original music since March 2013 was brought into sharp focus with October 2017's "Cycles" album in collaboration with Neptun 505. Additional work has seen Stellar Fountain, Bonzai Progressive and Massive Harmony take up the E.F.G. story to compelling effect.

A trio of appearances can be found on Particles with two appearances on the "Winter 2015" and "Spring 2017" compilations, following an earlier remix of fellow countryman, Kacper Kostecki, in June 2014. Now returning with two new original pieces, "Clockwork" continues to showcase E.F.G.'s music. The title track, featuring the vocal talents of Plicherss, opens with a running Moroder-style bassline before kick and 808 percussive elements create hypnotic off-beat patterns. Developing steadily with open-filtered glory, delicious chord progressions soar across the aural background. A loquacious vocal sample adds weight to the track title at the mid-point before melodic elements and a grooved chord motif combine with bassline variation in the second part to create of work of impressive technique and vision.

Partner track, "Moonlight Figure", revels in deep bass joy and a rasping note reaching out across the left-right divide. A smooth chord progression emerges out of the low-end torpor before a shimmering arpeggio ripples across the stereo spectrum in dizzying fashion. Rising and falling with consummate ease as the track works its way across an eight-minute timeframe, a new counterpoint melody makes its presence felt in the third movement to create a new and vibrant sonic collage.

Two new tracks keep precision time and find the E.F.G. sound running like "Clockwork".

Sjaak Herbert makes his return on 90watts after last years' Serenity single and his remix for Pascale's NAN. But this time the talented Dutchman is not alone! Here on 'Mass EP' he teams up with Ashwin van Dolder for what is the debut release of their new joined effort project named PolarNL.

They're kicking things off with the deep but moving tech house vibes of 'Hubble'. The track starts out quite moody but slowly but surely builds up until the duo open up the roaring synths and add some proper jackin' percussion to make your booty wiggle.

'Brain Damage' is, what the title might suggest, one for the head. A deep and hypnotic groove completed with a story about, well.., the brain obviously. Proper late night house music vibes here with a hint to the early days of electronic music.

Finally the guys show us 'Rocket To The Moon', house music in it's purest form. Jacking beats, cleverly placed synth shots, a wobbly bassline and a relentless infectious groove. Nothing short of spectacular this one.

Three tracks packed with timeless underground (ware)house grooves here, by a new duo with a bright future ahead of them!

A man of many talents -- singer, songwriter, and producer -- Norwegian artist Astroleaf is a proud new addition to our label roster. His Silk Music debut, "Open Your Heart," showcases his versatility as a composer, as well as the musicality and emotional depth of his work. This gorgeous broken-hearted ballad, a hybrid of the alternative singer-songwriter and progressive breaks genres, is paired with extraordinary remixes by label veteran LTN, who offers the poignant 'Sunrise' treatment. 

Astroleaf's stunning original version of "Open Your Heart" is a sonic plea to a former lover to give their relationship one more chance. The unforgettable refrain, "Open your heart, my darling," gives the song its name and strikes an indelibly emotional chord in the listener's own heart. A resonant bassline and a slowed-down, steady breakbeat offer the track plenty of low-end power as well. On vocals, Astroleaf evinces instant star power, as his voice is quite naturally both distinctive and affective, and the pop qualities of his songwriting are balanced well with elegant and mature compositional touches throughout the arrangement.

Ever-reliable Indonesian sensation LTN delivers a breathtaking vocal remix, thereby adding to his celebrated series of chilled, yet emotive 'Sunrise' interpretations of vocal electronic tracks. In the early going, a moody atmosphere sets the stage for the arrival of Astroleaf's vocal, which has been slowed down for enhanced sentimental effect. Crystalline melodies, stirring strings, and evocative pads provide the backdrop for the verses, as well as an especially incisive piano theme. Not following a traditional arrangement, the remix proceeds with a patient crescendo, offering a series of mini-breaks, but not an extended breakdown. The result is an exceedingly moving aural journey, guided by the mellifluous "narration" of the promising Astroleaf.

Central to the South American underground dance scene, Buenos Aries accounts for a growing number of high-profile artists. Amongst those ranks, N'Pot and Nahue Juarez now bring their "Unforgettable Summer" to Particles combined with a pair of scintillating remixes.

Through his N'Pot alter-ego, Nicolàs Delfino, defines his sound "characterized by a dark progressive style…and hypnotic grooves." With no shortage of takers, music signed to MNL, Balkan Connection and Superordinate Music has seen N'Pot supported by icons including Nick Warren and Hernan Cattaneo. Similarly, Nahue Juarez commands attention with his distinctive style, rooted in deep and progressive house. A raft of imprints has seen music signed to Clinique, Soulfire and The Purr as he joined forces with N'Pot on January 2016's "Selcouth" for Stellar Fountain. Now reprising their relationship, opener, "Endless Summer" mesmerises with its deep kick and hypnotic clave-led groove. A swathe of modulated pads sweeps across the stereo spectrum, punctuated by off-beat chords and rippling, delay drenched keys. A beautifully crafted breakdown adds further levels of melodic magic. Mirroring the same deep kick as its predecessor, "Unforgettable Memories" revels in rich melodic sequences and pads awash with white-noise shimmer and pulsating power. A loquacious vocal sample adds depth and intrigue as a rolling groove and intermittent piano motif showcase N'Pot and Juarez's craft and technique.

Belgian producer, Modulo, has been a regular on German label, Nie Wieder Schlafen. March 2017's "Energy Patterns" was a notable highlight with its quartet of original tracks and remixes from Kotu and Felix Wittich. Coming together with fellow countryman, Monotribe, on "Panacea", the pair produced a standout moment on the "Find the Truth" EP in September 2017. Joining forces once more, the Modulo and Monotribe remix creates a beautiful melodic extension of N'Pot and Nahue Juarez's original. With a thumping kick in play and shuffling hi-hat pattern to provide urgency, a sublime new vocal section adds to a glorious interpretation full of dance floor credentials and distorted guitar riff that lacerates through the mid-range. An emotive new bass progression locks tight against groove and melody in an innovative and skilful work.

From the port city of Rosario in north-east Argentina, Lucas Degiorgi immersed himself in music from an early age, influenced by iconic artists such as Depeche Mode and Daft Punk. Production work has seen him feature on a clutch of impressive imprints including OLD SQL, Mistique Music and Liquid Grooves – the latter accounting for the seven-track, "Veronica" album in January 2018. With his trademark "darker tone" permeating through his music, Lucas Degiorgi debuts on Particles with a ten-minute odyssey that builds intelligently with twinkling keys and new melodic phrasing. Taking the vocal sample of the original and wrapping it in textured and pulsing pads, his interpretation of is characterised by a new stepped arpeggio sequence at the mid-point that erupts into the third movement in grooved precision, providing genuine originality to N'Pot and Juarez's work.

With a pair of original tracks and dynamic remixes, N'Pot and Nahue Juarez are sure to provide an "Unforgettable Summer".

It's always nice when we get the opportunity to show you a new artist. For the new MNL release we're welcoming Hungarian producer Yöurr on board. A producer who has only recently made his debut on the Soulkraft label with two splendid releases. 
You might also know him for (unofficially) remixing Reboot's classic 'Caminando', a free download which gained a lot of support and even found it's way to Hernan Cattaneo who used it as the opening track from one of his Resident podcasts.
'The Lighthouse' marks his debut on MNL, and is a deep and dreamy piece of work, rich of detail and emotion. It's backed up by a remix by one of the main producers from progressive house's motherland Argentina; Sebastian Busto, who keeps the dreamy vibe alive but adds a infectious percussive drive and lays down a more euphoric vibe.

Funkstate - Samsara EP [Suffused Music, SMD214]

The 214th release on Suffused Music welcomes Funkstate to the label for their debut EP. Emilio Reyna and Hugo Ortiz hail from Argentina and make up the Funkstate production team. The duo made a huge impact on the progressive house underground in June of 2014 with their ‘Dada’ single on Luis Bondio’s Classound Recordings. A release on Luke Porter’s Temporum Music soon followed making them one of the scene’s freshest new names. Funkstate then disappeared in late 2015 and have not been heard from since. Now looking to reignite the momentum they had the duo returns with a highly anticipated EP for Suffused Music.

Spread across three tracks it’s ‘Khala’ which kicks the EP off on an electric note. Anchored by a rolling, well carved foundation the piece immediately commands a presence. As the groove begins to take shape a storyboard of psychedelic audio tantalizes the senses, all while building a lovely dramatic flow. Following an engaging first act, a spaced out yet emotive break culminates with an expressive array of sonic artefacts, as a rush of white noise pulls you back into the hypnotic groove. 

The title track ‘Samsara’ follows with it’s alluring, soulful essence. Backed by thick slabs of rolling bass and vibrant percussive waves, it doesn't take long for you to get sucked into it’s rhythmic flow. Stellar synth work combined with trippy designs, indistinct vocals and rising atmospherics build momentum over the first two acts. A short but timely break strips down momentarily, building tension through frayed percussion before the beats eventually drop for that ultimate 3AM moment.

The release concludes with ‘Mountain Feeling’ which finds Funkstate exploring the deeper spectrum of progressive music. Affectionate vocals, meditative bass and a tight rhythmic core sit perfectly against a backdrop of buzzing atmosphere. Smooth chord changes fuel a free flowing emotive wave as the piece follows a mesmerizing path before reaching a purring finale. A reflective piece to close out a hugely successful comeback EP for Funkstate. A hugely talented duo who look to be in the spotlight as 2018 progresses.

We are delighted to welcome back Mexico-based Dan Norvan to the Shores imprint for this next release: his ‘Turquoise Moon EP’ 

Having joined us originally for the 1st installation of our Coastal Selections series, Dan is back with a gorgeous two track outing. The title track is a smooth melodic affair, showcasing some classic prog chords, lovely pluck work and some great vocal chops; very reminiscent of the golden age of progressive house circa 2008.
