The 40th episode of Podcats is here and we are more than pleased to have the talented Copenhagen-based vinyl-collector DJ F1BI with us to bless the series with her selections. Raised in the Italian countryside with Albanian blood flowing through her veins, she spent her time out of boredom glued to the television while tunes from Balkan folk music, Italian jazz and library music was playing in the background. With music being a staple in her household, the sounds led her to spend hours of diggin’ and putting her hands on dusty records in a fusion of hiphop, jazz, and funk with influences from the African and Arabic scene. Within time, DJ F1BI felt a connection to the comfort and creativity to bring out sounds the analogue way, with a special love for the underground scene in hiphop. 

This is truly shown in her selection for this episode of Podcats with an excellent tribute mix for producers who have left an indelible mark on the hiphop scene with names such as The 45 King (RIP), Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf and The Prunes to name a few. Definitely a vibe all the way through, showcasing her knowledge and fine taste. Enjoy this dope selection and make sure you run it back!

Den Stenede Rille - The DJ duo, consisting of Asbjørn and Mads, is in itself a holy grail. In recent years, they have carved their name deep into the groove of the Copenhagen DJ and cratedigging scene.

On their own poetic and mythical journey, they have managed to unearth some of the most obscure and rare records. The kind of records that dedicated diggers would sell their souls to get their dusty fingers on.

This mixtape has been a long time coming.. a product of darkness and the last convulsions of winter, which bears the mark of melancholy and longing for their spiritual leader, Ole.

"Det har været en barsk og hård vinter for rillen - og er stadig. Oles kvartale tur til spaniens solkyst, for at undersøge den nøgne huds reaktion på stærke stråler, har efterladt rillen alene og fortvivlet i stenerhulen. Kun omgivet af Oles pladesamling og undertiden uhyggelige dansende skygger på væggene, sidder i rillen i mørket og forsøger at genfinde sin tabte gnist. Men hver gang rillens fingre tager på pilgrimsfærd hen ad pladereolerne, for at finde en opmuntrende melodi, kan de ikke få fat. Jo mere tropisk og dansabel melodien end er, desto sværere er det at gribe om pladen, som to ens poler, der aldrig helt kan mødes. Rillen prøver febrilsk at telefonere til lobbyen på Hotel Da Misto, hvor Ole holder til - Intet Svar…

Nætterne bliver længere, søvnen kortere, hulen koldere og pladerne begynder at fryse. En nat bliver det for meget for rillen, ud må han og væk skal han. Men til sin store forbavselse erkender rillen, at han atter er sneet inde. Dybe tanker bliver gruet derpå... I insomnisk vanvid river rillen den ene iskolde skæring ud efter den anden, med en sådan kraft, at skyggerne forsvinder helt. Mørket har omlsuttet rillen. I blindheden må han lade ambiente vibrationer, samt lysergisk lyrik, fremmane en mixtur mod mørkets kræfter. Et koldt vinylmiks blev brygget herom.

Habibi Funk will be a new sub label of Jakarta Records, dedicated to re-releasing arabic music from the 1970s and 1980s. It's a label and platform for funky/soulful and/or psych influenced music from the Arab world of the 70s and 80s.

Dalton was a band from Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. They came together as a band around 1968 when most of the members studied together at the University of Tunis. The band had five members. Faouzi Chekili on guitar, piano and vocals, Ridha Kouhen on bass guitar, Mustapha Rehouma and sax and percussion, Sadok Gharbi on trumpet and vocals and Skaner Alim on drums and vocals. They were active in the local scene, playing music that was heavily influenced by American soul and funk and at the same time regional musical traditions. In the early 70s the band got a regular gig at a beach hotel called Sahara Beach Resort on the coastline of Tunisia. They had six month contracts for a couple of years in the early 70s and during that time they would play every single night of the tourist season. While the hotel gig required the band to play sets leaning      towards tourist entertainment, the regular work helped put some money into the band's accounts. Using those funds the band was able to travel to Rome to record their one and only 7“ single release "Alech" around 1971/1972. The band eventually dismantled in the mid 70s and returned briefly as a new group with new members in the late 1970s under the name Carthago but that is a different story……

The single itself impressed us heavily when we first stumbled upon it through French collector Victor Kiswell. While the b-side "Soul Brother“ sounds like a Tunisian version of modern soul / AOR with it’s English lyrics and lush arrangements, the title track "Alech“ is the one that will get every party started. An infectious 3/4 rhythm, a great horn arrangement and brillantly layered vocals that made us think of Brazillian music or the Georgian groove band Gaya. Luckily Faouzi Chekili, the former band leader and composer uses social media communication so he was easy to track down. He is still active as a renowned musician in the Tunisian jazz scene and remains active recording and playing concerts both in Tunisia and internationally.
