Short Circuit: House Is…Vol2 is the long-awaited follow-up to a classic BennyK podcast recorded 5 years ago aptly named “House Is…” It was meant to be an exploration of house music, to be a definition of what “house” is, as well as to showcase some of the global talents of this particular genre of music. Not everyone understands house music and “House Is…” was to define house music in sound form.  (Puts Dictionary away) 

Now 5 years later, I was inspired to create another house set…not to say that any previous podcast wasn’t a house set, but I wanted to create a set that could carry on the “House Is…” name. Vol2 will hopefully sound timeless featuring distinctive vocals, piano, and melodies. It should be smooth, not forced, but ultimately each track was selected for its unique house sound. In anticipation for Amsterdam Dance Event, Late. Dark. Nights. is back with its 11th volume. ADE boasts having over 2200 artists from around the globe performing in 120 of the best clubs and venues in Amsterdam. It is a conference of electronic dance music unlike any other, in any other city, attracting 350,000 people from all over the world making Amsterdam one of the busiest and best clubbing cities in the world. This will be my first time at ADE and I can't wait to be inspired, educated, and join the hundreds of thousands of other music lovers in such an amazing city.

My hope was that this mix would sound right at home at All Day I Dream, Burning Man, or any open air or festival but true to my own style and taste. ben.jamin is back with his techno podcast Late. Dark. Nights. and now up to volume 22. This latest session was inspired by the hard and deep techno sounds of Berlin and the interesting new genre Leftfield House that is abstract in both sound and form. Most people can't pin down the specific qualities that define Leftfield House or how it differs from other forms of house and techno but what particularly caught my ear is how experimental it sounds. It's almost extra-terrestrial. The beat doesn't always follow the familiar 4/4 rhythmic structure and new sounds can drop into the track at any point. It provides for a lot of interesting sounds and texture. Monotony and  repetition is certainly avoided. Late. Dark. Nights. Paris has long been known as the City of Love as well as the City of Lights, but soon Paris will be known as home to Paris Circuit Party. Only in its second year and building off the success of its 2011 edition, Paris Circuit Party is several days of non-stop music, dancing, and a celebration of Pride. The event just so happened to coincide with Gay Pride in Paris only adding an additional element of excitement to the weekend's festivities, which featured several of Europe's best parties including Brussels' Hunkut, Amsterdam's Rapido, and Spain's SuperMartXe. The DJs appearing this weekend were a long list of internationally acclaimed DJs with special performances by Czech Republic sensation Kazazy and famed-Brit Sophie Ellis Bextor. With all that being said, Paris Circuit Party is set to the amazing backdrop of an amazing city setting the stage for an epic event. 

Paris, the city itself, and Paris Circuit Party were quite the inspiration for this new session of Short Circuit. Capturing the music and spirit of the event, Short Circuit: Paris is over an hour of hard driving beats combined with sweeping dance ballads heard on the Parisian dance floors. The vocalists featured in this session include Madonna, Toni Braxton, Maya, Leilah Moreno, Cevin Fisher, Alex Marie, and Kazaky who performed at the Official Major Party of Paris Circuit Party weekend. Some of the producers featured in Short Circuit: Paris are Steven Redant, Etienne Ozborne, Chus & Ceballos, Ivan Gomez, Nacho Chapado, Mauro Mozart, Allan Natal, and Peter Rauhofer. Not quick to be stereotyped as one type of DJ, DJ BennyK releases his next podcast Short Circuit: Underground, a deeper, darker tech house set inspired by such DJs as Victor Calderone and Danny Tenaglia. Underground is a departure from BennyK's last few podcasts that featured high energy dance tracks and the occasional pop diva, but for this latest session of Short Circuit no pop diva can be found. Short Circuit: Underground has quite a different energy and is described as the soundtrack you might here in a "back room" or on a journey to an altered state of consciousness. For that is exactly what Underground is...a journey, "a journey full of sounds...and beats. One that will lead you down, way down...to the Underground." 

It isn't the vocals that move this set forward but the sounds, beats, and the build in each track that capture the listener. Short Circuit: Underground is not for the light-hearted but is definitely for those music junkies who have a heart for true house music at it's finest.
