A few frogs calling late at night in the sauna pond near the Nature School in Palupohja in the Alam Pedja reserve Estonia.  They sound like they were two meters away but they were probably seven meters away.   Recorded at 11.51pm on the 23nd of May 2017. A mild night.  Equipment; A pair of Sennheiser MKH8020 microphones, a Sound Devices MixPre microphone pre-amp and a Marantz PMD661 solid state recorder.  Recording 3039.

China - Sassy Musical Exchange

Brought out by a rain storm, toads and frogs call out as thunder continues to roll across the cypress and saw grass forest at the Big Cypress Preserve, part of the everglades near Miami, Florida. 00:05 Southern Toad, 00:11 Green Tree Frog, Spring Peeper frogs' birdlike chirp throughout, and 03:20 far off Red Shouldered Hawk. Recorded in XY Stereo with Audio Techinica BP4025 and MixPre-3, 40hz low cut and 57 Db gain. One continuous recording with EQ applied in post. May 2018.

Deep in the Harenna Forest there are small ponds and puddles created by the constant humidity of the cloud forest. Frogs congregate in these areas and call at all times of day and night, along with insects and birds. 
This is a recording I made on a muggy, lazy afternoon. It was overcast and quite hot so the birds were mostly quiet, but the frogs didn't seem to mind. I love how the water and vegetation reflect their loud calls.

Tane Mahuta predawn quiet

Deity Microphones China sponsored my first 4 vlogs about field recording and also gave me some sweet mics to play around with in the meantime. Thanks Deity!

This was the first location of the first episode and after we filmed it, I felt that I could be better. Luckily the cameraman was still in town for one more day so I said I wanted to do it again but better.

We went back out to the same location and it seemed quite different. The water level was higher and the sky not as blue but still beautiful nonetheless.

In the vlog, I recorded one general soundscape of the water flowing into this small inlet. As I was walking and explaining about the recording I had just done, a sound caught my ear. I ignored it the first time but then it came back. It sounded like breathing. The man made jetty we were on had cracks and as the water of the Yangtze River slipped by, it created small waves which pushed the air in and out of these cracks.

It was the most beautiful thing I had heard on the island. The breathing sounded like sleeping in bed with a loved one and their breaths slowly come in and out, not constantly, but sensually erratic. Fast, slow, long, short, it was so human. I had never realized or ever recorded how nature, not just animals, could 'breathe' or be 'alive'. This connection between man and nature that is always the basis and goal of my work could not have been more succinctly expressed. It was such a profound moment for me.

Located in the Flinders Chase National Park in Western Kangaroo Island, the Rocky River is one of the only protected waterways in Australia. 

In mid-October 2019 we hiked along the river on first day of the five-stage Wilderness Trail. There are two beautiful cascades along the trail, formed out of prehistoric glacier rocks. This recording was made at the second cascade, where the sound of the water cascade is punctuated by the call and response of banjo frogs (Limnodynastes Dumerilli.)
