I've always been a fan of the track Spanish Joint  but I felt like the original is fairly mellow and couldn't find a way to fit it into my DJ sets. So i remixed this acoustic Spanish Joint with a more vibey dance feel so I can play out. Added new synths, keys, drums, bass, and sound efx.

Pat Van Dyke about Benny Sings and the remix: 

I first heard of Benny Sings only recently when we both appeared on Jakarta Records' compilation; 'Winter In Jakarta' in late 2014.  I quickly dug through his expansive catalog and realized that I was late to the party, and that Benny had been releasing records since the early 2000's.  Now both me and my kids love his music - in fact, they know every frame of every video in his YouTube catalog. :) He's an incredible songwriter and producer. 

I made an effort to go see him when he played in New York and reached out to him about the potential of working together.  When I was asked to work on a remix from 'Studio', I was excited to get the chance to re-work 'Black & Blue"  Originally, a laid back and sunny tune, I wanted to keep that bossa nova-esque feel by layering my vintage Rhythm Ace drum machine with some simple programmed 909 kick and snare, sprinkled with some DMX tom fills - referencing those epic synth toms heard on Benny's recent recordings like 'Shoebox Money' and 'Who's Fault'.  I recorded the live guitar, bass, and synth parts to give it more of a 'four on the floor' feel, and re-played the original bass line Benny wrote.  It was all played, recorded, and mixed by me at my modest Jersey City studio with the exception of the flute solo played by Zac Colwell - 1/2 of the creative powerhouse known as 'Fancy Colors' and a frequent collaborator of mine. Conceived in Cologne in 2005 and now based in Berlin, Jakarta Records has over a decade of sterling, esoteric output behind it. Stylistically, the label has featured a heady mix of hip-hop, jazz and bass, as well as putting on a host of prodigious beatmakers. Releases have included the likes of Germany’s unflinchingly unique Flo Mega, Swedish hip-hop veterans Looptroop Rockers and U.S. neo-soul queen Akua Naru, as well as gifted producers such as Suff Daddy and Kaytranada. Jakarta’s reissue sub-label, Habibi Funk, has also seen the release of long-forgotten and rare ambient, soul, funk, experimental and electronic records from the Far East. On top of that, it also operates two strictly vinyl subdivisions, Dubplates From Jakarta and Beatgeeks To Go, which focuses on timeless instrumental hip-hop. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Jakarta Records has put together a show that digs deep into the label’s vaults with tunes by artists such as Suff Daddy or Benny Sings, whilst also looking to its future with fresh music from their latest signing, Detroit’s Illa J, amongst others.

Benny Sings is a prolific songwriter, producer and artist from Amsterdam. He has released several albums, the latest of which is the critically acclaimed ‘City Pop’, released in 2019 on Stones Throw Records. His new album 'Music', which includes the singles Music, Sunny Afternoon, Rolled Up ft Mac DeMarco, and Nobody's Fault ft Tom Misch, is out in 2021. 

Benny has honed a signature sound while creating a colorful catalog of essential pop gems that have led to loyal global following, with fans including John Mayer, Anderson .Paak and Rita Ora. In addition to releasing solo music, Benny Sings co-wrote and produced the international platinum-selling hit song ‘Loving Is Easy’ together with English artist Rex Orange County. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists including the Free Nationals, Sukima Switch, Mayer Hawthorne, and many more. 
 
His music has appeared on HBO's 'Girls' and 'Love Life' Netflix's 'Love' and 'Easy', and 'Nobodies', Benny Sings has also composed for Apple and Kirin, and wrote and produced the score for the Japanese Netflix show 'Carol and Tuesday.'
