Nile Rodgers has played on over 2 Billion dollars worth of music! Yet, has he played one screaming guitar solo? Nope!
Rhythm guitar is a huge part of my 'game' too. Forget those solos, 90% of the time a guitarist is a team player, holding the track together rhythmically as an essential part of the rhythm section and also providing chords for the melody to sit on.
Nile's rhythm guitar sound has stood the test of time. Over the decades he's played written and produced for Chic, Diana Ross, Bowie, Madonna and still is relevant today with Daft Punk!
This track is the ultimate Nile Rodgers chop. But don't forget the killer bass line by Bernard Edwards. BTW the guitar part was written first!
I've updated the beat to something more modern, put on my flares, and gotten down!

Guitarists love Steely Dan because they integrated the instrument into their studio productions so beautifully. In the process they gave the world at least 10 of the top 50 guitar solos of all time!

Steely Dan ---- Deacon Blues

Thriller is an interesting rework. The melody line hasn't got a lot of notes to it - yet works instrumentally. Like many MJ tracks it relies on an insistent and repetitive muted guitar part to drive it along.
Thriller is the title track from the 1982 album of the same name. This album was the follow up to the 1979 Off the Wall album and firmly established MJ a a megastar.
The video accompanying this track also broke new ground by being shot with cinematic values - which also made it the most expensive video ever (at that time).
People forget its importance. MTV was in it's infancy and by getting heavy rotation 'broke' the crossover R&B/rock style to a wider audience.

This version is based on the Earth, Wind and Fire arrangement of the Lennon/McCartney classic.

Here's my smooth jazz rendition of the Michael Jackson classic from 1979. This one has stood the test of time!
It was the title track from MJ's album of the same name. Written by Rod Temperton of the band Heatwave


Off the Wall ---- Michael Jackson (downloadable)

My remix of the 2014 hit complete with Flamenco acoustic guitars and Dubstep Bass!
This was a hit for Cambridge band Clean Bandit on both sides of the Atlantic - and it got a Grammy too. Thus proving, yet again, that the UK is one of the top music producing countries. You can't get a gig here! - but we do have some top talent e.g. Jessie J and Ed Sheeran

Rather Be ---- Clean Bandit (Guitar and Dubstep rework)

Ed Sheeran was an international superstar at 22! He's got it all; a great voice, great songs and a total entertainer.
I'm prepared to overlook the fact that this track, my fave to date, has exactly the same chords as What's Goin' On by Marvin Gaye.

Thinking Out Loud ---- Ed Sheeran

This is sort of the unplugged version - done in the style of the Isley Brothers! Yes, I know, this track had so much airtime we all got sick of it! However. it got airtime because it was good and now is the time to revisit. I've taken the catchy distorted riff that was it's backbone and replaced it with an acoustic rhythm guitar. The band, Black eyed peas don't seem to be doing much these days which is a shame. I rated them, they were certainly not one hit wonders.

I Gotta Feeling ---- Black Eyed Peas

I've had this track on the back burner for years. It's such a brilliant track and I wanted to do it justice so it has gone through a number of versions to reach this point.
I knew I wanted to throw in some jazz chords and slow it down, which is what I have done, but I had to wait until I had learned enough to formulate a decent production.
The moral of this story then is... All things come to those who wait.

Kool and the Gang were another band from the disco era that have stood the test of time. They transcended the disco genre and their material still sounds fresh today. They had great musicianship and great songs, a killer combination over a dance beat. Their horns were second only to Earth Wind and Fire's horn section.

ABOUT ME
I play the music I like to listen to. 
As a guitarist I like to think I have my own style.
Harmony, and the groove is what I'm chasing, hopefully with a tasteful, nuanced, and distinctive presentation. 
I don't have a genre as such. I could sort of call myself a smooth Jazz 'n' Blues guitar 'thang' but in reality every track crosses over multiple strands of R&B/Jazz/Funk/Pop. Don't be put off by my use of the "J" word. Jazz to me is anything unpredictable and I'm nothing if not contemporary. 
Rhythm playing is as much a part of my "game" as lead soloing. I love the Funk!
My main instrument is guitar. I play a 1973 Ovation Breadwinner, an Ibanez nylon stringed and a Yamaha keyboard loaded with Keyscape. Unless stated I play all the other instruments too (mostly Bass), and sequence MIDI and arrange/produce. 

MY JOURNEY
I was signed with Fresh Air records and EMI in the 1980's creating Jazz/funk dance tracks but things were just as challenging then as they are now for musicians so I got a 'proper job' for 20 years! During all that time my guitar was in the loft! I rediscovered music in 2010 and Soundcloud in 2014.
