Programme Note:

In 1575 Queen Elizabeth granted Thomas Tallis and William Byrd a 21-year patent to print and publish music in England. As Milsom outlines one stipulation of this privilege was written in the preface to their first publication Cantiones sacrae (1575):

"…we [Elizabeth] do straightly by the same forbid all printers booksellers subjects strangers, other than is aforesaid [Tallis and Byrd]… to bring or cause to be brought out of any forren Realmes into our dominions any songe or songs made or printed in any forren countries, to sell or put to sale, upon pains of our high displeasure."

I was immediately struck by how this forceful disengagement with the foreign (forren) had parallels with our current politics. Interestingly, Tallis and Byrd’s Cantiones sacrae was a financial failure.

In B.m.B the live ensemble perform a slowly disintegrating version of Tallis’ motet ‘Mihi autem nimis’ (from Cantiones sacrae). Meanwhile through the speakers we hear mashed up recordings of speech as well as fragments of pieces by 16th Century European composers including Alfonso Ferrabosco, Clément Janequin and Orlande de Lassus.

Last year the London Sinfonietta asked me to make a postcard piece for their 50th birthday, which just meant the piece had to fit onto one side of a postcard. 

This is an electronic mockup I made up of the piece.
