A deeply personal selector - with radars for the wacky, the moody and the lowercase - mi-el’s style is a deft balancing act, from sung soundscapes and explorations of her heritage to contemporary bass, electro, and vanguard electronics.

Those who’ve caught her live will know the former MOT booker and now NTS resident is apt to blur the thinning line between selector and sound artist, having torn up countless great nights, venues and festivals in just a few years: dare we say Panorama Bar, Field Maneuvers, Boiler Room, De School, Big Dyke Energy and FOLD. Weirdness and detail. This is all I want as a listener and a dancer, and what I want to convey as Ikävä Pii. In this mix I’ve explored slowfast ambiguity, music for ponds and futuristic punk, pairing Italian Sunitty with warped UK techno, with a couple of WTF turns.

For the most part, it is extremely detailed music. It’s abstract and rich. I don’t like the definition of “sound design” anymore: it sounds “functional”, as if the goal was creating a product. These producers are (like me), instead, trying to spawn detailed worlds.

I’ve started making music with a punk band in Puglia. I picked up a guitar because my father and all his brothers played. Family gatherings were beautifully loud. Puglia was still a poor and tough place when I was a kid, so my love for international music was a form of escapism. I was (like many others) online a lot and in touch with musicians from all over the world. I started dreaming of London listening to The Clash at maybe 12yo? London has truly shaped me, I was radicalised here. Politically and artistically. And here’s where I embraced my queerness.

I think, in many instances, it was here that I was exposed to some really fringe stuff, and that’s how I realised I loved everything that was genuinely weird or boundaries-pushing. Furthermore, I believe that Hackney Wick makes my life as an artist easier. Cheap rent, community and proximity: it’s a 5 mins walk from the warehouse to the studio and the venue, and sometimes special things only happen thanks to the support of other locals. You know who you are! <3

Niche started in April 2023 as a monthly sonic hangout; noisy jams, open decks, and improvised sets. Now it’s a full-scale event, with performances by some of the best artists we know. It started out of necessity: an accessible space to experiment with fellow noisemakers. 
My relationship with the venue was crucial; I’ve been a resident at The Bath House for 2 years now, and Niche can only happen because my studio is there.

It is a lovely ecosystem of musicians, DJs, listeners and dwellers. We are trying to bridge the gap between the bedroom and the venue, offering a space for people to try new things out and take risks, playing for the most understanding audience. In terms of curation, I am looking for the most daring acts out there - no genre limitations, but definitely priority to live shows, and musicians in particular. 
Alongside artists I know and/or follow, we met incredibly talented people through the open calls, or other nice folks who just jumped on the groupchat and asked to play! Keeping it as open and diverse as possible is at the core of our practice. We only have one resident at the moment - the amazing Queenie.

@dj-fulltono is a visionary in the genre of footwork. Having had an enormous influence on the shaping and evolution of the genre in his home country Japan, his sonic explorations have long since spread and continue to influence the footwork community worldwide. His minimalistic yet dense, shuffling, shifting, polyrhythmic beats drift, slip and catch up with themselves, keeping every dancer on their toes. His releases on Exit Records, Booty Tune as well as collaborations with Skip Club Orchestra are some of the most unique and forward thinking productions in the genre. Much to our chagrin many of this prolific producer's productions remain unreleased but luckily for us this mix, which was recorded live at Compufunk in Osaka in 2023, is a treasure trove of his secret gems.
